Chapter 16

An hour later, we were sitting at the long dining room table with Jax’s entire family. I was seated between Jax and Mila, with Bash sitting across from me, Ace and Elias diagonal to me, and Hudson and Caleb were seated at each end of the table. I wasn’t used to eating with so many people. Usually, it was just Mom, Zoe, me, and sometimes Blair.

The even weirder part was the amount of food Jax had prepared for the meal. It looked like there was enough to feed a large army. He’d made barbeque chicken, and I was willing to bet there were at least three chickens on the table.

As I piled mashed potatoes and gravy, broccoli, and chicken onto my plate, I realized that, in the midst of my run in with the Shade, I’d completely forgotten about my promise to Roxy.

I turned to Ace. “Roxy’s having a birthday party on Saturday at the Purple Swan. It’s this bar and restaurant right outside of town,” I explained. “She wanted me to invite you.”

The hint of a smile touched his lips, but it seemed to pass just as quickly as I noticed it. “You can tell her I’ll be there.”

“I’m sure she’ll appreciate that.” I paused and then said to everyone else, “She wanted me to invite all of you to her party.”

“Even me?” Bash met my gaze from across the table, a look of amusement in his bright green eyes.

“Yes, though I can’t imagine why,” I replied. “You’d be the last person I’d invite, personally.”

“Oh, I know why,” he said confidently. “Roxy wants cool people at her party and she knows I’m cool.”

I rolled my eyes. “You keep telling yourself that.”

“I don’t need to, sweetheart.”

Ugh. I really couldn’t stand Bash. I seriously hoped that once Blair got back to town, if she fell in love with one of the Sherwood brothers, it wouldn’t be him. I wasn’t sure that I could handle him dating my best friend. But a glance around the table told me that the odds were in his favor. He was the only one who fit Blair’s type to a “T”.

Glancing over at Elias, I noticed that he didn’t look too amused by our conversation. He probably thought we were being immature. Maybe we were being immature, but Bash brought out that side of me better than anyone.

Elias cleared his throat. “There’s something we need to talk about.” He glanced over at me. “It’s confidential to our pack.”

“Oh. I can go outside for a minute if you need me to,” I offered, quickly getting the hint that he didn’t want me there.

“Nonsense,” Jax said. “You can stay. Can’t she?” He shot a look at his brother, a look that challenged him – no, dared him – to say that I wasn’t welcome there.

“I don’t know, brother. As much as we all care about Camryn, we can’t deny the fact that, as of right now, she’s a part of Demetrius’s pack. Even though we all like her, she’s technically the enemy.
