Melissa didnât want to go. She didnât want to leave Devon alone, not like this. Even if he had been a fool to go snooping through Kristinaâ stuff, he was still the only friend she had up here. But he was right. With Kristinaâs drug kicking in, he couldnât get away. If she didnât leave soon Kristina would drug her too. She gave his hand one last squeeze. Then, when Kristina turned her back, Melissa bolted.
She sprinted through the doorway to Kristinaâs office, and was nearly at the door leading out to the rest of the store when there was a click from the lock. Melissa grabbed at the handle, but the door wouldnât budge.
âCurls, get back here.â She turned to see Kristina standing at her desk with an un-amused expression, one finger pressing what must have been a hidden button.
Melissa shook her head, âDonât touch me.â
âPlease, this will all go a lot easier is you just come back and sit down. I promise it wonât hurt.â
âHow would you know?â
âBecause Iâve tried it before,â Kristina answered bluntly. âI canât remember much, but my friends said I didnât seem to mind.â She met Melissaâs terrified eyes with a softening gaze. âThis doesnât have to be a bad thing you know. Iâve seen the way you and Devon look at each other, I can help, if you want. When you wake up I can tell you whatever story you want to believe. All this violence and pain can be erased, washed away and replaced with an afternoon of laughs ending in a kiss. Just come back and sit down.â
Melissa almost did. Kristinaâs offer was a tempting prospectâgo to sleep, forget all the fear and pain, and wake up with a boyfriend. It would solve a lot of problems, but it would also be a farce. âI donât want that, not if itâs a lie.â
âIt wouldnât be a lie, miliya. You wouldnât remember any of this. To you it would be true. Pravda na veru, truth is what you believe. Think of all this as just a nudge.â
For a long moment Melissa almost said yes. Just let fate sweep her away, and let Kristina erase her problems. But a part of her deep down knew that there was something very wrong about striking a deal that you had to forget in order to live with. Her face creased in a frown. âNo.â
Kristinaâs expression darkened. âThen I am sorry.â She took a step closer, and Melissaâs mind went blank. How was she supposed to get away?
As she strode toward Melissa, suddenly Devon bulled off the couch and slammed into Kristina like a football player, tackling her to the ground.
âGET OFF!â Kristina screamed in surprise, trying to shake the boy free.
Melissa shook off her stupor. Devon was giving her a chance, a small one. But she didnât know where to go. With the main door locked she neededâshe needed a back door. She remembered Kristina telling Valerie to use the back way into her office. Okay, that was her way out, she just had to find it.
