Trip

Dakota is like the Mona Lisa hanging in a fire-damaged McDonald’s. Her beauty, her innocence, the aura she projects to the world…she just doesn’t belong in my apartment.

I’ve been staring at her for a half an hour now, watching her sleep, her bare shoulder exposed from beneath the blankets, the soft skin of her neck and cheek glowing gently beneath the morning light. I can barely get through a night’s sleep without being plagued by nightmares, dreams of the war, but Dakota lies there like an angel.

And last night, so did I for the first time in years.

It’s like she was sent here to save me.

To cure me.

And if I force myself to, I can almost make myself believe that.

Almost.

But this is dangerous. Insanely dangerous.

I told myself I would watch out for her. Watch from afar and make sure nothing would happen to her. I didn’t tell myself I would fall in love with her, smuggle her away into my apartment and make her mine forever. But that’s what I’m doing. That’s where I’m headed.

And what happens when she learns what kind of man I am? What kind of monster I am? What happens when she leaves me? I was broken after the war, but I put myself back together well enough to function. If that happens, I’m not sure I’ll be able to work again. In fact, I’m sure I won’t be.

No. I’ll get things straight for her in her life and let her go. That’s what’s best for her and for me. Settle this shit between her and Richard, get her situation with her apartment straightened out, and then let her go. Anything else will lead to disaster.

I leave her sleeping, wash my face, head to the kitchen, and grab my keys. I get my boots on and am halfway out the door when I hear her voice behind me. “If you didn’t live here, I’d think you were trying to sneak out on me.”

My heart beats faster when I turn and see her standing there in one of my T-shirts. God, if this wouldn’t be the most amazing thing to wake up to every day.

“I was just going to get you your apartment back.”

“Oh.” She nods. “For a second there, I thought you were going to make me stay here with you, ya know? Make me your prisoner.”

Fuck…

Why is she doing this to me? She’s got my gears spinning and my wheels turning, but I know where a plan like that ends.

Right now for her, that’s just pure fantasy. I’m the older guy who saved her cute little behind, swept her off her feet, and made a woman out of her. But once she learns who I really am, she won’t want anything to do with me. It’s better to just rip the Band-Aid off sooner rather than later before either of us gets too attached. Especially her.

“I—”

“So what do you do anyway?” she asks. “Besides stalk women?”

“I told you, I don’t do that. Just…with you.”

“Right.” She smiles.
