Chapter Twelve

“Maddie!” Sam shook her sister’s shoulder. “You’re late for boot camp.”

Her sister rolled over in her narrow bed and gave Sam her back. “Cancelled.”

Sam wrapped her robe around her. It was getting chilly in the mornings. Pretty soon she’d have to turn the heat on. “What do you mean ‘cancelled?’ Who cancelled it?”

“Chris.” Maddie flipped to her back and yawned. “Texted me late last night. Said it was off for a couple of days. He’d let me know when we’d start again. Yippee.” She swirled a finger in the air.

“Huh.” She’d have thought Chris would have mentioned that to her when they’d had their little heart-to-heart on the fire escape last night. Maybe he’d been as anxious to leave as she’d been. It wasn’t every day that the guy you despised but really sort of lusted after tells you that he doesn’t do relationships but hey, how about some good, hard fucking?

Her stomach tingled. Okay, he hadn’t said the good, hard fucking bit. That was just how she imagined they’d be together. And she was here for it. If she could wrap her head around the idea of a no-strings, expiration-date-stamped relationship.

“Are you going to just stare at me?” Maddie frowned. “It’s creepy.”

Sam blinked. “I wasn’t…I was just thinking.” About how Chris would feel between her thighs. Her cheeks heated. “Do you want to sleep another hour before school?”

Her sister gave her the gimlet eye. “It’s Saturday.”

“Oh.” Right. She blew out a breath, her lips vibrating. Which meant brunch with Caroline, something fun, but she needed to clear her head beforehand. “I’m going for a jog. Want to join?”

Maddie groaned and pulled her comforter over her face.

A no, then. Sam got ready and headed out the door. By the time she got back from her run, she was fully awake and looking forward to the weekend.

“Do you want to join me and Caroline?” she asked her sister after her shower.

“No, thanks.” Maddie pulled a bowl and a box of cereal down from the kitchen cupboards. “Can I hang with Bailey today?”

Sam put her earrings in. “She can come here. You can go to the beach, the mall, or the movies. No parties.”

Maddie nodded.

Sam hesitated at the door. “Make sure you lock up and keep the curtains closed.” She couldn’t imagine anyone perving at them from the fire escape in broad daylight, but still, she felt uneasy.

“Why?”

“We might have a peeping Tom.” Sam shifted her weight. She didn’t want to scare her sister but she needed her to be careful.

Maddie dropped her spoon, milk splashing onto the counter. “What?”

“It looks like someone’s been sitting on our patio.” She waved at the curtain-covered living room window. “It could just be another resident escaping their apartment for a bit, but better to be safe than sorry.”

“Is it the person who messed with your car?” Maddie gripped the counter, her knuckles going white. “Do you know who it is?”

“I don’t know.” Sam tilted her head. She’d thought her sister would shrug this off, make fun of her for being worried.
