CHAPTER Sixteen
Emily and I had gone to bed early and woke up well rested, knowing this was possibly going to be a long and draining day. We had no idea how many rock elves might currently be in Murkwood. It could be just a few or a great amount. Either way, just changing one rock elf into a light elf was worth the try.
As we stepped into Grandma’s living room, we were surprised that the lead elves Dolph and Beck were meeting with Grandma along with Lina, Berg, and Lunt. It felt like our entrance interrupted an important conversation, so Emily and I quickly sat down to listen.
Grandma said, “Girls, it seems we have a situation that needs mending before we can do any transporting. Both villages are full to their brims with elves and can’t find any more space to provide homes to any new elves at this time. We’re trying to design a solution.”
Beck seemed to pick up the discussion from before we had arrived when he said, “If we go up in the trees, we’ll risk damaging their trunks with the intrusion and the extra weight of new homes. If we keep spreading out our villages on the ground, they’ll be too large to keep hidden. Even with magic, we risk another creature or humans walking on top of the village. Shields might hide a village from sight, but it still can get damaged physically. All it would take is a human foot or two. In the past we stayed close to trees for less chance of that kind of damage, but now we can’t do that,” said Beck with a sigh. “The villages are so large, we fill in a whole section of woods.”
“Your villages need to spread just like the suburbs of a city,” said Emily.
“What are suburbs?” asked Beck.
Emily frowned. “Um, suburbs are . . .”
Grandma jumped in. “Well, large human cities also tend to spread out, and people who work in the large cities like to live nearby. Around metropolitan areas, smaller cities or towns often grow up just outside the borders of large cities. These are suburbs. Each suburb has its individual leaders that help run it. These smaller cities can spread out far into the countryside around big cities,” explained Grandma.
Lunt rubbed his chin. “Hmm . . . that gives me an idea. We could make small communities separate from the main villages but not a great distance away from them. Alf and I could make tunnels to connect these smaller communities to each other and the main village. If we put some gnome magic in them, no creature around would be able to penetrate these barriers. The elves could then travel freely underground between each community, and there’d be enough space between them to handle some intrusion but enough connection that everyone feels part of the whole.”
“That’s a great idea, Lunt!” Grandma said. “Elf suburbs. What do you think, Beck and Dolph?” Grandma looked into the faces of the two lead elves in the room.
