“You were quiet tonight,” Ty told me as we were driving home.
Watching the dark countryside go by, I replied, “You gave me a lot to think about. I was rather surprised by your suggestion that I look into the Campbell and Ames murders. Don’t you remember you made me promise that I wouldn’t get involved in situations like that anymore?”
“I remember.”
I turned in my seat to face him, “Then why have you changed your mind?”
“A couple reasons,” he said, focusing on his driving. “Besides there have been hints of your interest all along.”
“Such as?” I asked.
He laid it out methodically. “For starters, I heard the anger in your voice that first day, the day you told me about the story in the newspaper about Joshua Campbell being found on Anderson Road. Then Eric told me about the conversation the two of you had one morning in the shop. Another time was when the Ames kid’s murder was in the paper and you were talking to my mother on the phone. You didn’t realize I was behind you until I had been there for several minutes. I heard enough to gather what you were talking about. That same weekend, Lauren asked me if you were curious about it.” With a glance at me, he finished, “But I really found out your intentions after I asked Brent Stiles to go and see you.”
We stopped at an intersection and now he turned toward me. In the dim light of the car I could see his concern.
“I figure that if you’re going to be snooping around, it’s best that you be upfront about it and not go skulking around behind everyone’s back—especially mine. That way, maybe someone can stop you before you go too far.”
An impatient motorist behind us blew his horn and flashed his headlights. Ty checked for oncoming traffic, and then drove on.
Hesitantly I asked, “Are you angry at me for not telling you? Angry because I intended to break the promise I made to you last winter?”
“Not really. If I’ve learned anything about you this past year, it’s that you like adventure.”
I nodded, pleased that he understood. “I did tell your mother about what I was doing. She was going to keep an eye on me.”
With feigned annoyance he said, “Oh yeah, remind me to have a talk with her about that.”
We came to another intersection. Ty looked in the rear view mirror to see if anyone was behind us. There wasn’t.
Putting the Highlander in park, he reached over and grabbed my knee. As he did, his cool gray eyes focused on mine. “You will tell me everything you are planning to do. Not after you do it, before. Got it?”
“Got it.”
“I’m serious Ryan.”
“Okay! Okay! Yes, I’ll tell you everything I’m planning on doing.” Then somewhat redirecting the topic I asked, “Were you and your dad in cahoots about bringing the subject up tonight? Did the two of you play your mother and me?”
Ty gave a sly smile. “Noooo. Why would we do that?”
“Yeah, why would you do that?” I echoed.
