Chapter 5

Spring

I spend the rest of the trip splitting my time between my family and sneaking off with Vic. As much as I want to, I can't spend the night with Vic in his room. Not when I'm sharing my cabin with my parents. They would notice my absence and there would be too many questions. Questions Vic and I are still trying to figure out how to answer.

Vic is amazing. He's so easy to be with, and it feels like we've been together forever. Sure, he's more than twice my age but I couldn't care less. He's the best sex I've ever had, and he makes me feel like I matter, really matter. Being with Vic is like coming home. Which makes it all the harder to know that tomorrow we'll have to say goodbye.

I wanted to spend this last night alone with Vic, but my family insisted we come to the ball the cruise is throwing. It's a family-friendly event, and the ballroom is packed. I sip a cocktail, watching Vic talk with Paul and my dad. They laugh about something I can't hear over the music. God, I want to go over there and ask Vic to dance. As if sensing my thought, Vic's gaze meets mine. Then it slips behind me and darkens.

"Want to dance?" Kyle asks from behind me.

I turn, prepared to turn him down when May nudges me. "She would love to." May has been pushing Kyle on me the whole trip and it's getting old. I don't know how many times I need to turn him down. But I force a smile and let Kyle lead me onto the dance floor.

Kyle holds me tight as we dance. He lowers his head, his lips brushing my ear. "I feel like I've messed this up."

"What do you mean?" I ask, pulling my head back. I don't like how close he's holding me, or how his hand slips lower down my back.

He shrugs, shyly. A week ago I likely would have found it cute, but now all I see is a boy when across the room is a man waiting for me. "Well, I've liked you since I met you before the wedding and wanted to get to know you better. This trip seemed perfect but I feel like I haven't been really honest about how much I like you."

"Kyle, look I just don't--"

"I think if you gave us a try you'd feel differently." Kyle cups my cheek. "Please, Spring?" He leans forward then, his lips crashing down on mine in a hard kiss.

I jerk back, pushing him away just as a hand clamps down on his shoulder. I look up to find Vic standing there, his face is calm, but fury burns in his eyes as he looks at me.

"Sorry to cut in but I was wondering if Spring might like to dance?"

Kyle huffs and shakes his head. "No offense Vic but--"

"I'd love to." I take Vic's hand and let him lead me away from Kyle.
