It wasn’t long before two very loud thumps disturbed my reverie. Lex sprang from my lap as I jumped to my feet.

“What was that?” I asked him. His large green eyes blinked once.

“Never mind, don’t answer that,” I chuckled to myself. Already I was a crazy cat lady. That took a whole thirty minutes.

I wanted to move my things out of that top bedroom anyway, so I figured I’d combine the two tasks and limit my stair climbing. As I walked down the second-floor hallway, I checked each room. Tawny’s was a mess. Bedclothes strewn across the bed, wet towels on the floor, incense ash scattered across the dresser. I made a mental note to ask her who exactly she thought would be cleaning up after her. Samantha’s room was pristine. It was as though no one had been in there at all.

More importantly, I saw no indications the thuds had come from that floor, so I kept climbing. I had my eye on a perfectly pleasant room on the first floor with a bathroom attached. I assume it belonged to Gladys and Maybelle’s parents. Gladys had been using yet another room that was obviously added on at some point. The house was really huge. Way too big for one person.

When I reached my room, I shook my head in disbelief. Brodie was on his side, his poor little pinky fingers bent out of shape. The bedclothes were ripped in half down the middle. The pink side was flung over a chair and the yellow side was wadded up in the corner. The thuds apparently came from both dressers being overturned. I was none too happy to see that my own clothes bore the brunt of the turmoil and were also scattered. My underwear and bras hung from the bedposts like indecent Christmas ornaments.

“What happened here?” I scanned the room furiously. “Joe? Are you here? What happened?”

A spark of fear ignited in my gut when Joe didn’t answer. I ignored my shaking hands and gathered my clothes and other items, shoving them into the suitcase haphazardly. Then I scooped Brodie into my free arm. Bouncing between the walls of the hallway, I hurried as fast as I could back down both flights of stairs. I left Brodie in the sitting room and flung my suitcase onto the bed in my newly claimed room.

Returning to Brodie, I sat him up and checked him over. As I repositioned his fingers and straightened his shirt and necklace, I whispered, “Joe? You there?”

I heard him before I saw him.

“What?”

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah.”

“Can you come out and talk to me? Tell me what happened up there?”

“I guess.”

“What’s with the attitude?” I asked. “I’m trying to help.”

Joe emerged without a glance in my direction and drifted to the chair opposite me. He sat and propped his feet on the coffee table.

If looks could kill, the ghost of my husband would have done me in that very instant.

“Joe? Seriously, what is wrong?”

“Remember talking last night?”

I nodded.

“And you fell asleep in the middle of our conversation?”

I shook my head.
