AJ and Thomas tied in Hazel’s Odyssey while Reg finished up his call to the tyre importer, George Cook. After a brief discussion topside, they’d headed home instead of diving again, choosing to put plans in place for a return visit as soon as possible. With the current as strong as either had experienced before on Twelve Mile Bank, the odds of it improving were good, which would make their tasks exponentially easier.

“He’s still keen and offering to help with costs,” Reg announced, coming down the steps from the fly-bridge. “Let me see what Damon’s up to.”

AJ held up an okay sign but she had her doubts. Damon ran a flat barge with a crane in local waters moving items around the coast, building piers, and on one occasion, lowering a bronze statue into the ocean for an underwater installation. Which was where AJ had met Damon and his crane operator, Bash. She was certain the man would balk at running his barge out to the bank in the open ocean.

AJ picked up a pair of empty tanks by the valves, carrying one in each hand and hauling them off the boat. The daily tank-switching workout saved on a gym membership and kept her tattooed arms lean and toned. Thomas followed with another pair which they loaded into the rack in the back of her van.

“When we gonna have time to get back dere?” Thomas asked.

AJ paused and stared west across the ocean to where they’d been diving an hour before.

“We only have morning dives tomorrow,” she replied. “Not ideal, going out in the afternoon, but we could.”

“Be calmer in da morning, for sure,” Thomas noted.

AJ nodded. “But this is the fourth or fifth time this group have booked with us. It’s Craig, that nice fellow who owns a dive shop in California. You remember him?”

“Of course,” Thomas replied. “Dey always a fun crowd.”

“Yeah, and they’re expecting us to guide them, so it wouldn’t be right to put them on one of Reg’s boats, even if he has one open.”

“You need to stay shallow in da morning if you going back to da bank in da afternoon, boss,” Thomas reminded her.

“You do too as you didn’t get to dive this trip,” AJ pointed out. “Let me text Nora and see if she’s working tomorrow.”

Thomas raised his eyebrows.

AJ paused before typing. “I don’t think Nora has met this group, has she?”

Thomas thought for a moment. “No, I’m tinkin’ of dat group from Texas.”

“That bloke was a plonker,” AJ said, typing a text on her phone.

“He was, and den some,” Thomas agreed. “And she let him know it.”

AJ laughed. “Yeah, she missed the tact lessons in school. Craig always brings solid divers, plus we’ll be on the boat with them, so it’ll be fine. Anyway, the guys will like the scenery having her along.”

AJ’s good friend, Nora Sommer, was more like a little sister. She worked as a constable for the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, and her usual schedule was four long days on shift, followed by three days off.
