Reflecting on the session I noticed that sometimes I compulsively search for those “God connections” and want to call them out. But Jax had little capacity for it. When I first suggested the bubbles I expected it to last five minutes. Instead, his praying was almost fifteen minutes. Around the five-minute mark, I told myself I had to lean in and play. I needed to intentionally lose track of time and play in order to stay present with Jax. Playing and praying are similar. Jax invited me to play, “to catch his prayers,” and it felt like prayer in my body. Praying past superficiality is often beyond words, and I suspect meaningful prayer is at home in play.
