Chapter Fifteen

As they joined the others in the bedroom below, Robbie’s last words echoed with Rhee. That was exactly what had happened with Captain Drake. And unless she could find answers, it could happen to Robbie as well.

A chill crawled over her shoulders and down her spine when Rhee wondered how many other restless spirits might be lurking in the shadows of the old house. Amanda Carmichael had been killed there, but thanks to Vivian and her friend Jesse, Amanda’s killer was serving time in jail.

Rhee hoped they could do the same thing for Robbie. He deserved justice, and his spirit deserved peace. Whatever he had been like in life, Robbie Frasier now seemed to be a very polite and gentle soul who was lost and hurting. And Treena had seemed genuinely distraught over his death, regardless of the claims Clyde had made to the contrary.

Lucy led Clyde from the room and onto the landing overlooking the foyer. Rhee paused and turned back for one last look at Robbie’s body, still laying undisturbed on the floor beside the bed. The fading image of his spirit stood over him, staring down sadly. Her heart aching for him, Rhee stepped into the broad hallway, pulled the door closed behind her and locked it.

“Where to now?” Lucy asked.

Rhee listened for a moment and heard the vague murmur of voices coming from somewhere below. The sheriff could easily have arrived while they were upstairs, but she was pretty sure the voices would be more than a murmur if he had.

“Downstairs,” she said. “Don’t know where, but we can follow the sound of their talking.” She glanced over her shoulder as they started down the staircase, making sure Clyde was still with them. “You,” she warned sternly. “Don’t get lost.”

“Treena may not be too thrilled to see me,” he answered with a worried frown.

“Why? I thought the two of you had made up and were a happy couple again.”

He made a face and shrugged. “I don’t think she’s ready to go public with it yet. Her mother wants her to go back to college and marry a doctor or lawyer, or somebody she can brag about.”

Lucy stopped and turned around, pausing halfway down the stairs. “You mean her mother doesn’t think you’re good enough for Treena? Aren’t you, like, a boat captain or something?” She turned a puzzled face toward Rhee. “And isn’t Treena the one who wants to train to be a chef? Isn’t it her big ambition to work with me in the kitchen whenever she can and eventually take over?”

“That’s what she’s indicated,” Rhee said. She looked up to where Clyde waited two steps above them. “Does her mother know anything about you?”

“Nobody knows anything about me, or about Tom Dawes, or that Frasier kid. That’s why we were sneaking around in empty bedrooms. Treena keeps her private life strictly on the downlow.”

“Well, when you put it that way, it doesn’t exactly sound like every mother’s dream,” Lucy said as she faced the front and continued down the staircase.
