A yell jolted me out of sleep, jerking me upright.

I blinked my gritty eyes and leaped to action, turning to David who was thrashing, his arms flailing as he fought an unseen opponent.

Travis rolled away to dodge the attack as I grabbed onto David’s wrists, trying to contain him. “David. Wake up!”

His eyes were closed and he was mumbling something incoherent.

“Travis, he’s having a nightmare. We need to wake him up.”

Grimly, Travis went to the foot of the bed and started tickling David’s feet.

I gaped at him. “What are you doing?”

“David’s feet are very ticklish and this is how I used to wake him up when he had a nightmare when we were kids.”

Instead of pulling out of the nightmare, David pulled his feet away and curled up in a ball, groaning like he was in pain.

“Let me in!” Kait called, pounding on the door.

Rushing over, I unlocked it and threw it open. Kait burst in, placing his hands on David’s head as I watched nervously.

David’s eyes flew open. “I’m awake! I’m awake!”

Job done, Kait stepped away from David and turned to me. Immediately, his face split with a devious grin.

When I looked down, my face heated. I was still naked. Before I could cover myself with my arms, which was bound to look awkward, Travis threw me the robe he’d used earlier.

I pulled it on. Suitably covered, I went to David. “Are you okay?”

He sighed. “I just had a nightmare.”

“I know. Do you want to talk about it?”

“Not really.” Understanding his reluctance, I nodded and let him have his privacy.

However, Kait’s face hardened. “You need to talk about it. Either with everyone or just you and me, but it needs to happen. You can’t just ignore it.”

“I can and I will. I don’t want to talk about it. Are you planning on forcing me? My blocks aren’t as weak as Evalia’s.”

I reared back at the words. Where was this coming from? He was acting like a spoiled brat.

David shot me a withering glance. He had clearly picked up my thoughts, proving his point.

I rolled my shoulders, deciding to ignore the abrasive words. There was clearly something going on with him. “David, I think you should at least talk to Kait about it. I’m worried about you. Please?”

He looked like he was considering it. After a moment of hesitation, he seemed to deflate. “Fine. Whatever. Kait, I’ll meet you in the living room.”

Accepting that he’d been dismissed, Kait left the room.

“I understand that you’re worried,” he started. “But I wish you would trust me enough to know if I actually need to talk about something.”

I knelt on the bed next to him.

When his eyes dropped to his lap, I put my finger under his chin and tilted his head up, not giving him the chance to hide. “Just like you would do for me, I’ll do whatever it takes to keep you safe and healthy, and that includes your mental health. I can’t read minds but I know what that nightmare was about.
