CHAPTER FIFTEEN

"Did Everly and Reggie ever mention their favorite hangout spots, beyond the times they spent at your lessons in the mall?" Alex asked.

Ginger gave a knowing smile. "They didn't need to say a word," she said, her eyelashes fluttering playfully. "I saw them here myself, almost every weekend." She tapped the countertop lightly and nodded with certainty. "If they weren't learning tunes at the music shop, they'd be sure to drop by here at the candy store to visit me."

"Really?" Alex's frown deepened. "So, music and candy are their favorite things, too, are they?"

"Music, yes. It's common to excel in what we enjoy, as opposed to what we dislike. But I can't say candy is their passion, at least not to the extent it is for me."

"How can you tell?" he asked.

"Think about it, Detective. We're discussing kids. It's hard to find one who doesn't like candy, or sweets like cake, cookies, and ice cream. It's a universal truth across cities and nations; children love that burst of sweetness. And it tastes great, which is definitely a plus."

Alex shrugged. "I see," he said. "So, Everly and Reggie, they came around often? How many times would you say in a week?"

Ginger lifted her eyebrows briefly, then threw a glance at Charlotte, who was poring over the vast selection of candy with great interest, her nose almost brushing the colorful wrappers. "They'd drop by every Friday without fail," she stated, turning her attention back to Alex with a more relaxed smile. "They had enough time for their visits then. And then, most Saturdays in the afternoon, although that's been less regular lately. But never on Sundays, that's for sure."

"What do you mean by 'enough time'?" Alex asked, curious about the duration of their stay. "How long do they usually spend here?"

"They're here for hours," she explained. "In fact, the store has almost become a second home to them. There's no one else booked for the upcoming appointment slot, so they're not rushing as you might see elsewhere. This isn't just any candy store; it's a place where all the finest sweets are sold at prices that are easy on the wallet."

"Uh-huh," he said. Alex looked over the candy store from behind the counter where the woman stood. With just a quick glance, everything seemed normal except for the woman's unusual way of talking and the odd sensation he felt as he listened to her. Her smile was beautiful, though, and it kept appearing on her face as she talked.

Alex wasn't particularly drawn to the woman's smile in the same way he felt about Charlotte, but there was an undeniable charm about her. Ginger Haus had a certain allure that made her stand out. Listening to her was another matter entirely, but as a detective, Alex knew he needed to gather information for the case at hand.

"It's impressive how much people love and cherish your candy shop," he said.

The woman responded with a gentle "Thank you," though Alex sensed she was downplaying her pride.
