‘Quick, Flora!’ yelled Gwen. ‘We can’t free the Spell Sisters without it!’

She tried to leap into the water, but Flora dragged her backwards with surprising strength. ‘No, Gwen! You can’t go into the river!’ she said, still hanging on to Gwen’s arm. ‘Look how fast the current is. You’ll be swept away too!’

‘Please, Flora! I have to try!’ Gwen tried to fight her off and pull free. All she could think about was getting the pendant back. If they lost it, all hope of freeing the remaining Spell Sisters would be gone and Morgana would win! Gwen was usually stronger than Flora, but fear made her cousin hang on tightly.

‘I won’t let go! You’re not going in there! I mean it, if you go in there, you’ll have to pull me in too!’

Gwen knew her well enough to know Flora meant it, and although she herself was a strong swimmer, she knew Flora wasn’t. She stopped struggling. ‘OK, but we’ve got to do something, Flora!’ she said desperately.

Flora grabbed her hand. ‘Look, I can still see the pendant in the water. Let’s follow the river. The current might be less strong away from the bridge and we might be able to get the pendant out then.’

Gwen nodded. She could just see it still glinting in the rushing water too. ‘Come on!’ she cried.
