oonlight’s going to get captured again if he stays here,’ said Flora, urgently. ‘How can we make him go back to the woods?’

Gwen looked at the expression in the horse’s eyes and her heart sank. ‘He’s waiting for us to ride him – I can tell. He won’t go unless we do. I think he wants to protect us. I could ride him to the woods and run back maybe?’

‘But what about Evie? The pendant will only work for you, and we don’t have a lot of time,’ Flora said, looking worried.

Gwen wracked her brains. They needed to get Moonlight away from the yard as quickly as possible. ‘Please, Moonlight!’ she begged. ‘Gallop away. We have to stay here. We can’t come with you.’

The stallion tossed his head and half-reared but he still wouldn’t leave.

‘If . if he really won’t go unless someone rides him, maybe I could do it?’ Flora said.

‘You?’ Gwen stared at her. ‘But you were too scared to ride Merrylegs earlier.’

‘I know,’ Flora swallowed. ‘And I don’t really want to ride Moonlight on my own, but if it’s the only way to get him out of here then I will.’ She set her jaw determinedly.

Gwen hugged her. ‘Oh, Flora, you’re amazing! Just tell him where you want him to go and hang on tight to his mane. He’ll do just what you ask once you’re riding him, I’m sure.’

‘Well even if he gallops all the way to the end of the kingdom, it’s better than him being captured and locked up again,’ said Flora, bravely. She took hold of Moonlight’s mane and bent one knee.

Gwen gave her a leg-up onto his back. Flora clutched his long mane and struggled a little to get seated, her face pale. She gingerly tucked her dress around her legs with one hand.

Moonlight nudged Gwen as if to say, ‘come on, you too,’ but she shook her head. ‘Not this time, Moonlight. I’ve got to rescue Evie. Take Flora and look after her.’ She kissed his face. ‘Please?’

He whickered softly, as if he finally understood.

Flora gulped. ‘Come on, Moonlight!’ She touched his sides with her heels. ‘To the forest!’

Moonlight plunged away and galloped across the stable yard, so fast he was just a white blur with Flora, clinging as tightly as she could, to his back.

Oh, please stay on, Flora! Gwen thought in alarm, as Moonlight raced up the track towards the woods. She didn’t want to look away, wanting to make sure that Flora was all right, but she also knew she had no time to waste. The yard was quiet now. The only eyes on her were those of the watching horses. It was time to rescue Evie!

Gwen ran to the stable door. She realised that the sky was suddenly darkening. Grey clouds were sweeping across the blue from all directions, blocking out the sun. An icy shiver ran over Gwen’s skin. The clouds were moving too fast for it to be natural. Morgana, Gwen thought with a flicker of dread.
