‘Thunder loud and lightning bright

Come together on this dark night.’

Through the chinks in the glass, Gwen could see that dark clouds were meeting over the chapel. Then lightning began to flash, and there was the roll and crash of thunder. The chapel seemed to shake with every thunderclap. Gwen felt the power rolling over the stone building.

Outside, she heard Merlin’s voice rising above the storm.

‘From the storm above, power I take,

I use it now, a spell to break!’

There was an enormous flash of light. For a second, every inch of the chapel seemed to shine and then the light disappeared and the door flew open. Merlin stood on the threshold. Sparks of silver glowed in his long grey hair, and his staff was still held aloft.

‘You did it, Merlin!’ Gwen gasped. ‘You broke the spell!’

‘We did it together,’ said Merlin, his eyes meeting Chloe’s. ‘Thank you, Spell Sister of Avalon.’

Chloe smiled back.

‘Be quick,’ Merlin said quickly. ‘You must leave this place now. As soon as Morgana realises her spell has been broken she will return, and you do not want to be here when she does.’ He beckoned to them and they ran out of the chapel into the rain.

‘I shall return to my sisters,’ said Chloe quickly.

Outside the full moon was rising in the sky.

‘Go with all speed,’ Merlin said. ‘The time of the eclipse approaches. When the moon is fully shadowed, Nineve’s spell of protection on the Lake will fade. You must be ready to fight Morgana then.’

Chloe nodded. ‘We will do all we can!’ She hugged Gwen and Flora. ‘Goodbye, girls. See you soon.’

‘Goodbye!’ they gasped.

‘To the Lake!’ she cried as she finally disappeared in a swirl of silver light.

Gwen felt a rush of relief. Chloe’s magic had finally worked!

Merlin stepped forwards. ‘The eighth Spell Sister has returned, but the danger is not over yet. Morgana must not take Avalon. Will you do all in your power to help our friends tonight?’

Gwen and Flora nodded hard.

‘Then go to the Lake as quickly as you can. Your help will be needed.’

‘But how can we help? We’re not able to perform magic or cast spells,’ said Flora.

‘Do not underestimate yourselves,’ Merlin said softly.

He whistled and Moonlight came trotting out of the trees.

Merlin helped Flora up on to the stallion’s back. Gwen needed no help. She vaulted up behind Flora, her heart beating wildly in her chest. The danger to Avalon wasn’t over yet, and whatever she could do to help, she would do it.

‘Remember the fate of the kingdom rests in your hands tonight.’ Merlin’s dark eyes found Gwen’s. ‘You may not be aware of it now, but you carry great power and you know all you need to.’

Gwen had no idea what he meant. ‘Are you coming with us, Merlin?’ she asked hopefully.

‘No,’ he said sadly. ‘I cannot. I have played my part in this story for now. The rest is up to you, Nineve and the Spell Sisters. May the magic of Avalon keep you safe and help you triumph over evil tonight.
