COURAGE TO ACT

A personal vision is always an important aspect of your Spark development. So is your ability to take action. But sometimes this is difficult because there is real risk involved, and the world doesn’t always reward those who make big changes or who try to break the mold. For instance, a common response when a lawyer decides to quit a law firm and become a schoolteacher is, “Why is he doing this? Is he nuts?” When a marketing manager takes a bold, new approach with a client campaign, many stand back and smirk, “Good luck with that one!”

We all felt this type of pressure ourselves when we were leaving the military. Our colleagues asked openly on several occasions why we were “quitting.” In our minds, we weren’t quitting; we had just completed our service commitment and were ready to move on to the next step in our careers. And yes, we know how others’ opinions can make you feel insecure as you decide to live more intentionally with your vision. It might even make you question why you’re contemplating a new path. But that shouldn’t prevent you from taking action. It might just mean you have to establish a new support network to encourage you on your journey.

Beyond feeling societal pressures, we also have to battle ourselves and the routines we’ve been building. We’re creatures of habit, of course, and it’s hard to break our habits even when they aren’t doing us—or the people around us—any good or taking us to where we want to be. Sometimes our routines are even running us into the ground.
