Chapter 16

Blair

Camryn had been gone for more than a day, and I was still hanging out at the Evans’ house. I was too afraid to go home. I knew it was probably ridiculous because home was only next door, but I was afraid that Logan would come looking for me.

I didn’t know how likely it was that he would come looking for me here at the Evans’ house. It was always possible that he could come looking for me here, but it seemed like a safer option than going home, where I knew he could find me for sure.

I sincerely doubted that Logan even wanted to find me anymore, but... still. If he did show up, the last thing I wanted to do was face him alone. The Evans’ house seemed like somewhat of a safe haven, a place where he wouldn’t know to find me quite as easily.

I had just popped a brown sugar cinnamon Pop-tart in the toaster when I heard the sound of the front door opening.

When Camryn’s mom, Lynda, came into the kitchen, she smiled at me. “Hi, Blair.”

“Oh, hey. I’ve been staying here for a couple of days now. I hope you don’t mind.”

“You know you’re always welcome here,” she replied with a smile, just as Dexter came bounding into the room, sliding all over the kitchen floor, and jumping on me excitedly.

“Hey, boy,” I said, leaning over so that he could kiss my face.

“Blair, where’s Camryn?” her mom asked, as if noticing for the first time that her daughter wasn’t in the room with me.

“Oh, um, she’s, uh,” I stammered, realizing that Camryn hadn’t exactly given me instructions on what to do when her family asked where she had gone.

How was I supposed to be the bearer of bad news, the one who had to inform her family that she had decided to run away with the Sherwood pack?

At that moment, Zoe came into the room, carrying an armful of mail and a loose piece of paper. “Mom, something happened to Camryn!”

“What do you mean ‘something happened to Camryn’?” Lynda asked, turning to her daughter with a look of concern.

“Here, read this,” Zoe replied, handing her mother the paper.

Her mom began to read the letter aloud. “I love you all tremendously. I promise you will see me again one day. I’m just not sure when that will be. Please don’t come looking for me. And tell Jax not to come looking for me, either. Love, Camryn.”

An uneasy feeling filled my stomach then.

Camryn had never mentioned leaving a letter in the mailbox. And why would she tell Jax not to coming look for her if she was actually with Jax?

Unless that was to draw attention away from the fact that she was with him... but I doubted that.

Something about this whole thing just didn’t seem to add up. That uneasy feeling began to spread through my body like wildfire.

Lynda glanced over at me, an almost accusing look in her eyes. “Blair, what in the world is going on?”

“I’ll tell you what’s going on,” Demetrius said as he entered the room.
