Today was turning out to be one hell of a birthday. Fiona had found a way to make the simulation work. The Security Council had voted to go ahead with the evacuation of Earth. And we didn’t need to destroy the planet to protect the universe. Good things really did come in threes.

I lay on my back on my narrow bed, my regulator deactivated and all of my mental barriers down, basking in the psychic silence. The Residential Sector had been constructed with the psychically gifted in mind. A mild EM field charged between every wall, offering the maximum amount of privacy to psychics and norms alike.

Tila lay stretched out beside me, her nose tucked into my armpit. Each of her exhales carried with it a gentle snore. Idly, I stroked her velvety ears, ending the day exactly as it had begun. Only now, anxiety didn’t twist my stomach into knots. I felt blissed-out on relief, eager to see what the future would hold for both of my peoples—Olympians and humans.

At the brief buzzing of my door chime, I begrudgingly scooted away from Tila without disturbing her and stood, tucking my feet into a pair of soft, cushy slippers. I activated my regulator as I shuffled toward the door, then pushed the button to open the door panel.

And blinked when it slid to the side, revealing Fiona bouncing on her toes in the corridor. “Fio,” I said, my brow furrowing. I snuck a peek back at the slumbering dog, then stepped out into the corridor and tapped the button to close the door panel. “Déjà vu.” I spoke through a yawn, making the words barely comprehensible.

“What?” Fiona waved away her one-word question. “Never mind.” Her gaze dropped to my regulator, then returned to my eyes. She bunched up her nose, making a pained expression. “I hate to do this,” she said. “You look like shit.”

I guffawed lazily and leaned back against the door panel. “You hate to tell me I look like shit?”

She bit her bottom lip, her internal battle written all over her face. “I need your help with something,” she finally said after a long moment of indecision. She pointed over her shoulder with her thumb. “In Gertie’s room. It’s for the simulation. It’s quick, I promise.”

It took my exhausted brain a few seconds to piece together what she meant by “Gertie’s room.” She must have been referring to the System Operator chamber down on the lower level, where I had found her cursing like a sailor a few days ago.

Had it really only been a few days? So much had happened since then. It felt like months had passed.

I closed my eyes and shook my head, forcing my tired mind to focus. Fiona needed me to help her with something. I yawned again as I rubbed the sleep from my eyes. All I wanted was to crawl into bed with my snoring dog and zonk out for a couple of days. “Can it wait?”

But when I opened my eyes and saw the apologetic smile curving Fiona’s lips, I knew the answer.
