Chapter Twenty-Eight
I dropped the daggers to my sides. "I'll justâI'll just get dressed."
Secilya sighed. "If you must. We need to talk."
I do not know if there are any four words a woman can say to a man that strikes more fear than, "We need to talk".
She sauntered to the table and poured a glass of wine. She then watched me, amusement on her face as I fussed about trying to pick out some clothes. The more amused she looked, the more hopeful I grew. I looked in the back of the wardrobe: it was solid.
"How'd you get in here?"
"My great-grandfather, Lewis the First built this castle. Story has it that he was paranoid. He built passages into the walls. This room has one, as does mine; many do. That's why I had you put in this particular room. My brother and I discovered them as kids. We spent many days exploring."
I grabbed a pair of breeches and a white silk shirt and hurried back to the bedroom. Once dressed I hurried out to see Secilya. She regarded me with her businesslike face. She sipped her wine and I waited.
"You're forgetting something."
Confused, I opened my hands. "Forgetting something?"
She stood and stepped close to me. "You're forgetting to kiss me." She then looped her arms behind my neck and pulled me close.
Our lips touched and I thought I flew among the clouds. All my tension melted away as I returned her embrace. I pulled her close and never wanted to let go.
Then she pushed me back. "I've missed you so much."
"When I lost you, I lost everything," I answered.
"It can't be like it was before. We're at my father's castle, and..."
I could not think about that. Her future terrified me.
She rested her head on my chest. "I don't want to marry that man."
I kissed the top of her head. "There must be a way. There has to be."
Secilya kissed me again. I ran my fingers through her hair.
"I thought I lost you out there," she said between kisses.
"You kept me strong."
Secilya led me to the velvet chairs. We sat across from each other.
"Tell me how you really escaped."
I smiled and placed my hands behind my head. "Oh? Are you accusing me of being dishonest with your father?"
"I know you were being dishonest," Secilya answered with a smile. "You're a terrible liar."
I told her the story of how my dagger healed me, how I could grab it by the blade, how Vychan grew careless. I told her how my love for her kept me sane during the torture.
"My determination to see you again kept me strong," I concluded. "I refused to die out there."
"I never gave up hope," said Secilya. "I mean, since they thought you dead, I found a couple of guys to have flings with, but I never gave up hope."
My eyes widened.
"I'm kidding! I only have eyes for you. You and I are made for each other." Secilya leaned forward. "Trevor's on his way."
"You have a plan?"
"Yes."
