She felt better for having it in her hand.

She felt alive.

This time she would make sure she had one shot left for the Beast.

NINETEEN

It hadn’t taken long to sort out the flight home, but Konstantin wasn’t particularly enamoured with having to kick his heels until the following morning.

He could have left earlier, but that would have meant arriving a lot later at the other end. The train, and that was one thing this kind of climate wasn’t good for, a long air-conditioningless train journey, would have taken forever, so an extra night in the hotel and a few hours in an airport lounge to come didn’t seem like such a hardship.

His phone rang. Lethe’s name flashed up.

“Hope you’ve not packed your bags yet,” Lethe said.

“I have no luggage,” the Russian said, matter-of-factly. He shifted on the bed and held the phone away from his ear so Lethe could hear the complaining squeak of bedsprings. “But I do have luxury accommodation.”

“Sounds like you’ve got company.”

“Funny. You need something? Or is this a piss the Russian off social call?”

“The old man wants to know if you would mind hanging around for another day or so, just in case.”

“Just in case of what?”

“You know he worries.”

“She’s a big girl.”

“That she is. But it’s that place.”

“You want me to go in and perform an exfiltration?”

“Not yet. But—”

“But if someone has to, I’m the man to do it.”

“It’s you or Frosty, or you and Frosty. It’s just in case the shit hits the fan.”

“And my flight?”

“I’ve already postponed it.”

“So this is more of an order than a request?”

“You know the old man wouldn’t explicitly order you to stick around, but I know he’d appreciate it.”

“At least tell me there’s something you want me to do rather than twiddle my thumbs.”

“Just sit tight.”

“Hurry up and wait.”

“No need to hurry. Enjoy the bed for a while. Read a book.”

“Funny guy. I know a taxi driver you’d get on well with.” He hung up and slumped back on the bed. He stared reluctantly at the paperback still lying on the floor where he had thrown it.

“The glamorous life of a super hero,” he said to no one but the woodlice he shared the room with. He wondered if the chain smoker was still waiting outside. Maybe he should go down and shoot the shit with him? Teach him some basic tradecraft?

It was only a few minutes later when his phone beeped. It was an incoming text message. One word: Earbud.

“I’m here,” he said, still pressing it into position.

When he had a job to do he forgot that the thing was even in place, but whenever he was resting it felt like the most uncomfortable thing in the world, so he took it out.

“Finally. Okay, that’s everyone,” Lethe said before the old man’s voice took over.

“There’s been a development,” Sir Charles said. Konstantin didn’t like the way he said that. A development. That was never good. “I wanted to tell you all at the same time. Saves repeating myself. So let’s keep it brief.
