CHAPTER TWELVE

Dr. Olena kept Julie hidden with a lab coat around her shoulders for the short trip across the ER to the private rooms at the back of the medical unit, although, when they went inside, this room was anything but private. Kaplan paced the floor, muttering to himself. Droppelheimer leaned against the back wall, and Taylor sat in an armchair.

He shot to his feet at the sight of Julie and rushed over to her. For a moment, she thought he’d grab her hands and give another heartfelt panicky speech, but to his credit, Taylor stopped a few feet short of her. “Uh, I brought you this.” He held out a navy PMA hoodie.

“Thank you,” Julie murmured. After handing Dr. Olena’s coat back to her, she took the hoodie and pulled it on, then zipped it up to her chin. It hid most of the silver glow.

Taylor rested a hand on her shoulder. “You okay?”

Julie nodded. “I’m fine.”

“Is she?” Kaplan demanded of Dr. Olena.

The elf smiled. “Julie’s in excellent health, Captain. She was lucky this time. The uncontrolled magic outburst didn’t do anything to harm her or anyone else.”

Taylor let out a breath, and his shoulders sagged.

“That is good news, Doctor.” Droppelheimer straightened. “Although surprising, considering Private Meadows is listed on our system as human.” He raised an eyebrow.

Kaplan turned to the orc. “Cadmeus, we’ve known for some time that Meadows here is not human. She is fae.”

“Lunar Fae,” Julie added quietly. “I’ve kept that secret.”

“Lunar Fae?” Droppelheimer’s composure slipped, and his hands dropped to his sides. “Really?”

“Yep,” Bianca confirmed. “She’s been under a concealment spell all her life. Thanks to her bond with the dragon egg, it’s weakening.”

Julie flashed her a grateful smile, glad she’d shared the whole story with her while Dr. Olena had been conducting her tests.

Taylor stepped forward. “She had to keep it secret, sir. It’s to keep her safe.” He squared his shoulders. “I was the only person who knew.”

Kaplan waved a hand. “I’m aware of the risks Lunar Fae run, Woodskin.” His bushy eyebrows drew together like bulls locking horns in a fight. “I’m just surprised that Meadows didn’t consider that if we had known, we could have taken steps for her protection.”

“Perhaps that is why we weren’t told, Jack.” Droppelheimer smiled faintly. “We all know how Meadows feels about being protected.”

Kaplan rounded on Julie. “Is that true, Meadows?”

Julie squared her shoulders. “I’m not interested in being caged, sir. I want to serve the PMA, and I’ve been doing a good job of it as a human.” She tipped her chin up.

Kaplan’s eyebrows were in danger of getting seriously tangled, and his massive hands curled into fists. Julie gritted her teeth, ready for a shouting match, but after a moment, Kaplan’s shoulders sagged.

“I understand that, Meadows.” His voice was unexpectedly soft. “But you have put yourself at risk by not taking the advantage of training to get your new powers under control.”

Julie sat on the edge of the bed, her body aching with exhaustion. “I’m sorry,” she admitted.
