“Sure.” Darcy put down the paper. “What can I do for you?”

“You know that Thomas is retiring this year.”

“Yes.”

“I want you as Department Head.”

“But I thought it had to go through the committee?”

“It does, but I have the final say. They’ll go with my recommendation. You are a take charge kind of guy, Darcy. For a man of your young years, I’ve never seen someone with so much control. Also, we think alike. We’re steady and habitual, good old fashioned staples of academia. ”

He made him sound like a stuffy old fart. “Ah, thank you, sir.”

“Anyway, thought I’d give you a heads up, Darcy.”

He stood up. Darcy knew he was expected to thank him. “Ah, thank you, Sir,” he said.

John Arnot nodded, then excused himself.

Darcy sighed, head of the department. It was a lot of responsibility. He should have been in the clouds instead of feeling quite burdened by the idea. In class, he didn’t feel quite there. He cut the lecture short and assigned a double reading for the weekend, which earned him a few moans and groans. As he was erasing the blackboard, one of the young male students walked up to him.
