Chapter Four

DELANEY

After we made love, Justice pulled the covers over us and we fell asleep wrapped in each other’s arms. It was the perfect end to a perfect night. Who knew I’d meet the man I’ve been looking for my entire life when I was supposed to be meeting another. Thank God Louis asked me out and bailed.

Several hours later, Justice’s phone starts ringing, waking us both up. Justice growls and pulls me closer. I think he’s going to ignore it, but then it rings again. He kisses the nape of my neck then rolls out of bed, searching for his jeans. When he finds them on the floor, he picks them up and pulls his phone out.

“Yeah,” he says, walking out of his room and closing the door.

I can hear him outside in the hall talking, but I can’t make out what he’s saying. My insecurities come back full force and by the time he steps back into his room with a guilty look on his face I know I’m not going to like what he has to say.

“I have to run up to the main building. There’s something I have to take care of.”

“Right now? What time is it?” I say looking out the window, still seeing stars.

“I’m sorry Darlin’, I wouldn’t go if I didn’t have to. It shouldn’t take me too long. Go back to sleep and we can have a repeat of what happened earlier when I get back.” He says, wiggling his eyebrows suggestively.

I don’t laugh. While that’s tempting, I can’t help but feel like there’s something going on. Something he’s not telling me. It just doesn’t make sense. “I can go home.”

Justice stops in the middle of getting dressed. “Please stay Delaney. I promise to be back as soon as I can. It probably won’t take me more than an hour at the most.”

“If you’re sure,” I say, not feeling right about staying in his home while he’s off doing God knows what.

“I’m sure,” he says, leaning over the bed and kissing me.

I watch as he pulls on a clean white t-shirt and another flannel. “I’ll be back soon,” He says kissing me deeply before pulling away and walking out of the room.

Lying in his bed I listen to him move around the house for the next several minutes before I hear the door open then close. Next, I hear a truck start up and drive off. I’m too wired to sleep. I rifle through his drawers and find a flannel shirt of his and pull it on. It starts with turning his light on in his bedroom to find some socks and me noticing a true crime novel on his nightstand. Who is this man I just gave everything to?

After using the bathroom, I walk around the cabin peeking in empty bedrooms with empty closets. At least he doesn’t have any children, at least none that have left anything here. When I walk out to the living room, it’s a simple space with a sofa and a recliner in front of a fireplace.
