Chapter 24

After going to Ivy’s home and checking on her and the boy curled up on her bed, I headed back to the field. When Romulus told me of the king’s duties for the first night, I decided not to try to meet him.

Walking along the creek, water rippled along the black rocks. Snow piled along the edge of the water and icicles dripped from the sides of the small waterfall. A thin stream of water trickled down the center, dripping into the pool. I was surprised at how peaceful I felt when I walked in the forest. The sounds and feelings, wrapped me in a blanket of goodness. I felt whole and alive.

The evening sun was setting as I headed toward the entrance of the field. Thick shadows extended from the deep forest, as the light faded but I could see the faint outline of the doorway with the last rays of the sun. I called it a door because bare tree limb-like arms formed the rounded top with tree trunks for the sides. Big pink lady-slippers grew here too. The snow fell around them, as if the white was a blanket keeping them warm during the cool nights.

I walked through the door. No matter how many times I strolled into the magickal field, the sensation amazed and warmed me. It was friendly. The small shelter of twigs and tree limbs stood with a rounded hump of snow on the top and, as if a blanket was tucked into the opening, a dusting of white on the edge. I didn’t know why I felt surprised by it. It had only been a few days since I was here with Micha, learning about our history.

Crawling onto the blanket, I took a breath and looked out over the field. The sun was setting at my back, causing shadows to reach out across the snow in black fingers, but what made it stunning was the pinkish glow between each of the fingers and the hue of orange encircling me.

I sat, watching the darkness take hold and drown out the light, as I waited for him. I curled up and kept my eyes on the edge of the field from where I knew he would come and I waited. Hoping he would emerge from the shadows with the smile, which melted me each time I saw him.

The heat of the rising sun woke me. I immediately sat up, looking at my surroundings. Micha never showed and it made me sigh. I needed to speak to him and tell him all the things on my mind—to clear it. He was the only one who could help me. I stood and immediately felt the cold in my feet. My toes were frozen and I began to shake. I had to get back to the castle before I froze to death.

It took me a long time to stumble back to the village. I stomped up the steps leaving snow behind me as I made my way to my room.
