Chapter Ten

The men worked tirelessly out in the cold, bringing as many of the outliers as would come into the safety of the castle. They fortified the walls then gathered supplies for the long, harsh season ahead. The snow had stopped and the sky had cleared, but Vasilli knew they only had a short time before winter really set in.

He worked alongside his men, but his mind kept drifting to thoughts of flaxen hair and eyes so blue and deep he could drown in them. Nika’s soft, lithe curves kept toying with him. They remained at the fringes of his awareness, taunting him no matter how hard he worked. His eyes constantly sought her and he was delighted him when they found her doing some outdoor task. They were on her now.

Watching as she moved about, in search of something, he realized that his movements had stilled. He was chopping wood in the yard outside the castle. Menial work for a king but he didn’t shirk any duty great or small. He labored alongside his people wherever the need arose.

Nika wore no cloak, only a shawl that she’d probably borrowed from one of the serving girls covered her head. The sway of her form as she moved enticed him to watch. With her head covered, she might have been any other maid in the castle, but even without her striking hair that was so foreign to his land, Vasilli knew her by the way she moved. Thoughts of her small body crushed against his the other night as the snow had fallen around them and he’d plundered her sweet mouth caused his groin to tighten.

Setting the axe he’d been swinging down in the middle of the stump, he swiped at his brow, thankful for the heavy clothes he wore because they hid all evidence of the effects that the memories of kissing Nika stirred.

A hard wind blew across the yard, plastering her gray woolen dress to her curves this way and that. All the delights of her figure were outlined and set into movement from it. It made Vasilli think of some kind of north wind goddess, a force of nature, weaving spells on the land in her passion and fury.

Her hair came loose when the shawl blew back, the cold painting a rosy glow on her cheeks. It was a sight that Vasilli desired to see in warmer conditions, perhaps in a scenario that involved her lying in a soft bed underneath him. He blinked, shaking his head.

Nika’s blonde locks whipped around her. She gathered them up, holding them in her hand, but all that were in the yard had already been as captivated by her as Vasilli. The women were quicker to go about their business, but the mens’ gazes lingered on the fair-haired vision.

Vasilli scowled at them.

She stooped to pick up some pieces of firewood then saw him standing behind the chopping stump. A cheery smile that belied the chill air brightened her face. All else faded into the background for Vasilli.
