Chapter Nine

Terry 2006

“I know it’s complicated, but it can’t be impossible. Do you think that the person would even know you were doing anything?” CJ asked.

I sighed, “I don’t know. Maybe not. Why are you so gung ho over this?”

CJ took a deep breath, “I need you to do something for me.”

I kicked my feet as they dangled over the bleachers. The afternoon air was eerily quiet, and CJ wrung his hands for a long time before continuing.

“You know how it’s just my mom? It always has been.”

I shook my head yes. He and his little brother had been raised by their single mom, Gem, ever since we had been friends. Our friendship went all the way back to kindergarten, I assumed it had always been that way.

“I have been wondering a lot about… My dad. I have asked my mom a couple of times, but she always changes the subject. But I need to know. I need to know who he is.”

“She says she doesn’t know who he is?”

“No, she refuses to say anything. I have no idea if he’s even alive. It’s like having this whole other part of me missing.”

I thought for a moment, trying to figure out how I would even bring that up to Gem. I had a feeling the person had to be thinking of the event for me to pull it directly.

“Will you help me?” he asked.

I smiled without humor, realizing I had never even considered saying no.

The next day after school I came home with him, and he made a big deal out of running to the store to get more soda while I waited with his mom. I could see no introduction to the conversation, so I just went for it. Gem and I were sitting at the kitchen table, her doing a crossword and me trying to do homework.

“Gem?”

“Hm?”

“Where is CJs Dad?” I asked, trying to seem casual.

Her features registered shock before her poker face came back, “Did he ask you to try to get information?”

I looked up, afraid she was mad. But she just seemed sad for CJ.

“Maybe.”

She sighed, “Relationships are complicated, Terry. All relationships. Between people that once loved each other, and between the child that you are meant to protect. Does that make sense?”

I tried to agree. She slowly went back to her crossword. I took a quiet deep breath then gently reached over to hold her hand. She patted it, maybe thinking I was reassuring her. As easily as I could, I reached into her mind. It was just there, no jolt.

CJ’s dad's name was Gary Allen. They had dated for years in high school before Gem became pregnant. However, once the pressure of supporting a family hit him, Gary cracked. He began doing drugs, even in the same room as Gem when she was pregnant. She begged him to stop. She ended up leaving him in the middle of the night. He had never tried to find them, and she hadn’t spoken to him since.
