The cruel sun tormented through the window, burning shapes across my bed and pinning me to my mattress. Groaning, I shielded my tired eyes with my pillow. What had I done now?

On the nightstand, my empty mug of tea stared at me. The gritty feel of it lingered on my tongue as well as the unfortunate dirt-like taste. Sage didn’t explain what the tea could do, but maybe it had done something. A flash of Sage and her magic spoon flickered through my brain. There had to be a reasonable explanation for how she’d performed that trick, but I hadn’t thought of one. It couldn’t really be true? Could it? But if witches were real, that would mean that all the things she said—the bizarre things about being possessed by a ghost—could all be real too. I couldn’t even talk to Lane about it. I’d bolted out of the café and bailed on both her and Ethan. I cringed. Ethan. Another thing I didn’t want to think about. At least, not right now.

I rolled toward the side of my bed and forced myself to sit. My limbs ached, sore and rigid, like going twenty rounds in a cage-fight and never stopping. Or at least that’s how I figured it would feel. A lump of clothes sat piled near the door. I hadn’t worn them recently. My stomach twisted. Of course. Why did I honestly think today would be different?

Black rimmed my fingernails. I flicked my index finger, and flakes of dried brown mud fluttered out. At least it wasn’t blood this time.

My stomach churned again. But this time it wasn’t actually fear or dread. The greasy smell of sizzling bacon lured me to my feet.

After grabbing my phone, I rushed down the stairs into the kitchen.

“Morning,” Dad said as he scrambled eggs in a frying pan, the dreamy bacon sputtering beside him. “Thought it would be nice to have breakfast together for once.”

“Yeah, sure.” I gripped my forehead and blinked. Dad looked different. Better. His hair was slicked back, and although a decade out of style, still a thousand times more effort than usual. His clothes didn’t carry the same hopeless wrinkle they had over the past several months. Perhaps the tea did have some sort of impact. Maybe I had woken up in a totally different dimension.

I slipped in behind him and took two plates out of the cupboard, then cutlery from the drawer. “You seem like you’re in a good mood today.”

His smile morphed to a frown as he switched off the elements and carried the piping hot frying pan toward the table. After serving the eggs, he dropped the frying pan in the sink and it gave a sharp sputter as it touched the water inside. He snatched up the plate of bacon and sat down across the table.

I helped myself to a few slices, as my stomach insisted that I take more. So good. The salty heaviness would hang on me until lunch, but it would be worth it.
