Chapter 31

The evening air, crisp and cool, welcomed us as we headed down into the bustling heart of Wealdcairn. The excitement from our visit still buzzed through my body, but as the shadows grew longer, the need for a place to rest became apparent.

“I know a cozy little place,” Emlee said. “The Skyward Inn. It’s where Tarn took me once when I accompanied him to Wealdcairn.”

“You went to Wealdcairn with Tarn?” I asked.

“Hm-hm,” she hummed, leaning a little more into me as we strolled down the cobblestone street. “He wanted me to meet some of the traders that do business with Faingrove to prepare me for when I would be the High Elder.” She sighed deeply. “I am so very happy I won’t have to do any of that.”

I chuckled and nodded. “Yeah,” I said, “I’m happy about that too.”

Soon enough, the warm glow of the Skyward Inn beckoned us, not far from Wealdcairn’s bustling heart. It was a cozy place, large enough to accommodate a few travelers and retain comfort, but it sat out of the way a little so that it wouldn’t draw in too many people.

Stepping inside, the inn’s warmth welcomed us as we shrugged off the evening chill. The sounds of laughter and chatter filled the air, mingling with the enticing aroma of roasting meat and freshly baked bread wafting from the kitchen. My stomach rumbled in anticipation.

“Evening, travelers!” a voice boomed, and we turned to see a bearded and bald faun with a bit of a paunch greet us with a broad smile, his eyes twinkling. He leaned against the counter. “How may I serve you on this fine night?”

“Hello, Farlost!” Emlee called out, offering a little wave.

“Ah, Emlee!” he called out. “Good to see you again! And who is your friend?”

“Husband,” she corrected him, and I felt a pang of pride at having such a lively and beautiful woman refer to me as such. “His name is Jonathan Rider.”

“Welcome, Jonathan!” Farlost boomed, stepping forward to shake my hand. “Family of Clan Brazenheart are always welcome here. How may I serve you two?”

I stepped forward, returning his smile. “We’d like lodgings for the night and something to eat,” I said. “I hear good things about your inn from Emlee.” We had had a small meal upon entering Wealdcairn, but we could do with a true supper.

Farlost’s face lit up with pride. “Ah, you’ve chosen wisely, my friends,” he said, scratching under his left horn as he fetched a key from a hook behind the counter. “Twenty Windcash each for food and a room. You won’t regret it; I promise you that.”

It was serious money, and I immediately mentally evaluated that this Windcash from the Dungeon was not going to last us very long. We handed over the coins, and Farlost pocketed them with a nod of thanks. “Take a seat! I’ll have it all brought over.”

Emlee and I made our way to a quiet corner table, settling into the worn but comfortable chairs. It felt good to sit down, to take a moment to breathe and process the day’s events.
