Chapter 19

When she didn’t reply, he strode over and spun her around to face him.

“There hasn’t been one day since I left that I haven’t thought about you. What you were doing, how you were, where you were. Do you know how many nights I’ve spent going over every memory we’ve ever created together? All of them. From the moment I first met you that summer afternoon when Lucas invited me over to his house to do homework right up to the moment I left three years ago. Nothing has run through my mind more than you, Marena. What we had together. What I caused us to lose—all of it haunts me. But, despite the danger, I had to see you again. If you imagined that my last thought this side of the grave wouldn’t be of you and how desperately I love you, then you’d be wrong.”

Marena’s mouth hung open in shock. She frantically searched his eyes for something that she needed, something her soul needed. The moment she saw it, she threw herself into Coulter’s waiting arms. He caught her in a tight embrace and hauled her up against him. The two drifted together into a kiss as natural as air blowing over grasses on a summer day. Coulter tightened his hold when Marena’s arms wrapped around his neck.

Everything that made Coulter who he was wrapped itself up in that kiss. Strength. Passion. Determination. It was all there for her to see, along with one emotion that she hadn’t felt in years—promise. As their kiss deepened, one of Coulter’s hands came up to hold the back of her head while the other rested possessively on her hip.

Marena felt lost in a dream that felt better the longer it played out. So, when she felt herself being lifted through the air and placed onto a nearby table, it barely registered in her rational mind, and it certainly wasn’t enough to make her want to break their kiss. The wild horses on Carrot Island couldn’t have dragged her away from his kiss.

Coulter’s mouth traced a line from her neck to her waiting lips. Her hands gripped his head, locking him in place. She kissed him as if her life depended on it. Marena tilted her neck upwards to allow his roaming lips better access while her hands raked through his hair. When he reached the sensitive spot on her neck that he had discovered years ago, she shivered.

“I know I have no right, but if any man has ever touched that spot, I’ll kill him,” he growled against her ear.

“You’re right, you don’t,” she agreed, smiling at him. “And no. No one ever has—but you.”

Pulling her back into his arms, Coulter hugged her tight. There wasn’t an inch of space between them. Closing her eyes, Marena allowed herself to be comforted by the man that had never ceased to bring her great joy and heartache in equal measures.

“It’s no different for me, Marena. It’s always been a two-edged sword. We’re two halves of the one thing.
