SIXTEEN

Auris returns to the living room in her nightdress and robe, bends to kiss her daughter on the cheek, then joins me on the couch. By then, I’ve had time to think about what has transpired between Parse and myself. I do not pretend to understand it. I do not even know how it could have come about, this six-year-old child choosing to communicate with me—and only me—by thoughts alone. He apparently doesn’t do it with his mother. Or perhaps with anyone else in his family.

Just me.

Because I alone can speak Merrow—although, it seems, so can he. But how? Or why? I glance over at him once more, but he is busy with his games and doesn’t look my way. I wonder if he can explain anything of what is happening with his abilities—if he knows how unusual this is. I wonder if anyone else knows about it.

“Can we talk now about what has happened to you since you left us?” Auris asks, her voice so kind and reassuring I am tempted to throw myself at her feet and reveal everything.

But I simply smile and nod my agreement. “I think we need to.”

I am still one of the family, but I am not the girl that left them three years earlier. I am stronger and wiser. I have become—at least in my own mind—an equal in every way that matters. And I need to make it clear that, while I love and care for them more than ever, I am no longer in need of anything other than their love and respect.

I have discovered my Merrow self. In the process of doing so, I have developed the use of my inish. I am nowhere near as strong or competent in its use as Auris is, but one day I might become so. In any event, I am strong enough to stand by myself.

But I do want to talk about it. I need to know more. I have to find out if any of them have knowledge about me that might help unravel this mystery.

I smile at my sister. “Where to begin?”

Even though I shouldn’t, I glance once more at Parse. This time, he is looking back at me intently.

“Does Parse ever speak?” I ask. I can’t stand it any longer. I have to ask. “I mean, out loud?”

Now Auris smiles. “He does—though he doesn’t talk very much. Mostly just to me or his father. He likes to ask questions. He’s very interested in learning about things. But he’s also very self-contained, content with being alone. If he speaks to you, consider yourself special.” She leans toward me. “Come now, tell me something of yourself.”

I decide to let my confusion over Parse rest for now and tell her everything.

When I am finished, she leans over and kisses me on the cheek. “It’s been very difficult for you. You need to tell the others. The rest of the family needs to know. We’re a family riddled with secrets, thanks to Ancrow. I
