Chapter Ten

Andy’s terraced house faced a wall across a one-way street. Beyond that wall was a railway line. A train went by, slowly creeping along the rails as it made its way either in or out of Euston. I listened through the broken window of the car as he parked.

The house was light brick with white window frames. Steps led up to a red door.

“I can cast some more aversion, don’t worry. Let’s get him inside.”

The street was empty. I opened the back door, and Andy stopped me.

“What’s wrong?” I wondered.

“When I said let’s, I meant I’ll carry him.”

“Tell me where it hurts.”

“You what?”

“You were thrown across the room. You must be in some sort of pain.”

He shrugged. “Nothing I can’t handle.”

He moved quickly, pulling the man off the seats and throwing him over his shoulder once again.

“Andy!”

He winked. “Here.” He handed me some keys. “You can get the door.”

Rolling my eyes, I jogged up the steps to the house, unlocking the front door. I stepped into a hallway that smelled of vanilla air freshener. The walls were painted magnolia, the floor pale wood.

“Thanks.” Andy came past, making a left halfway down the hall.

Closing the door behind me, I hurried after him.

He was laying the man out on a brown leather sofa, making sure to place a white cushion under his head.

The room was long and tall, decorated with the same wooden floors and magnolia walls as the hall. There was an open fireplace, a television, and a dining table over by some patio doors, white curtains open and tied off.

“You want something to drink?” he asked, heading over to draw all those curtains, as well as the ones across the living room window.

“What do we do now?” I responded. “How do we keep him here until next weekend? What about tomorrow? I’ll have to go to the studio alone.”

“No way.”

“What choice do we have if Pranay’s not released?”

“He will be.”

“They can keep him in custody for twenty-fours, can’t they?”

“Don’t worry, Dylan.”

“I’m super-worried. If it comes to it, we’ll have to have someone come over to take me.”

“No one else is doing that.”

“I can’t cancel my appearance. Kimberly will have my head on a spike. Although—” I took a moment.

“You’re not considering it?” He winced as he spoke, his hands going to his sides.

“Where’s your medicine cupboard?”

“Kitchen. I’m fine.”

“Take me to your kitchen. That’s an order from your boss.”

“How can I refuse an order from up high?” His grin lit up his already bright face.

“You can’t, now get moving.”

The man was now snoring gently.

“What if he wakes up?”

“We’ll hear him,” I said. “Your front door is locked, right?”

“Of course.”

I nodded, and he led me down the hall to his kitchen at the far end. Black granite worktops, pine cupboards, and a white country sink awaited me.

Andy opened the cupboard closest to the door to the back garden and pulled out a box loaded with medical supplies—cough syrup, painkillers, plasters, and bandages.

“Take off my T-shirt,” I instructed him.

He laughed. “Gladly.”

“You know what I mean—my shirt on your back.
