Chapter Sixteen
Lorelei
ONCE THE SUN BEGAN its descent towards the sea, I told Marcus to stop. The engine shuddered as he turned it off and I crossed to the railing, closing my eyes and drawing my power.
I looked over my shoulder. “You need to brace yourselves.”
The men planted their feet on the deck, their hands clasped behind their backs, in a perfect line like the soldiers they were. It was the only hint of their nervousness and worry. Their faces were set in blank expressions and their muscles strained against their clothes, betraying their tension.
Humor twitched at my lips as I turned back to the sea. I hadn’t meant literally.
My hands gripped the rail as I tilted my head back and my voice poured out of me, stronger and steadier than when I sang from the cliffs. I infused the need for answers and help and information into the song, allowing a hint of what was at stake to tempt them. I sang my triumphant return, I was no longer trapped, no longer broken, I was free. I called for my friends to welcome me back into the fold.
The wind danced and flirted, and the waves swayed and crashed to the beat of my song. My power swirled around me, lifting my hair and making the skirt of my dress twist and play. It bubbled happily inside me after being silenced and trapped for so long.
I let the last note of the chorus echo and fade across the sea, still wrapped in magic. With a last whispered plea, I turned back to the sailors.
They stared at me in awe, their arms hanging limply at their sides, their eyes wide, their jaws soft. My siren preened at their attention, enjoying bringing them to their knees at the sight of her majesty. They should worship her, love her, fuel her.
I wrestled her back under my control as she hissed at being locked up inside me. The sailors relaxed as I returned to normal.
“Your eyes were glowing. Like the fucking galaxy.” Garret stepped forward to reach out and cup my face in his palm.
“Yes. They do that when the siren takes over.”
His thumb stroked my cheek. “It was beautiful.”
I sighed. “Yes.” Beauty hadn’t been the boon most people thought it was for me. For me, it had been a curse, making it harder to control my power, making it harder to find people who loved me and not my face or body.
“So, what now?” Cade asked.
“Now. We wait. They’ll come.”
Garret grinned. “Awesome. Time to watch The Avengers.”
“What’s that?”
“You’re going to love it. Trust me.”
