Although threat of death was not imminent for the missionaries in the Sudan, they had their own challenges. Arlene named hers “battle fatigue.” Being a clinic nurse in rural Africa was so different from the way she had trained in the States. She had hundreds of patients waiting each day the clinic was open. Her veranda was a 24–7 emergency room. In addition, she was an intensive care nurse, moving among the clinic tukls where the desperately ill stayed for months at a time. She was also a missionary, concerned not only for the body but also for the soul. She performed her functions with limited resources, minimal experience, a language deficit, cultural barriers, and profound urgency. Each day she wondered who would die and how many.

A subtle feature of Arlene’s internal landscape, however, was that she was able to distinguish disappointment from discouragement. Arlene accepted disappointment as a natural part of life. Discouragement, on the other hand, was a sin begotten of the belief that Jesus is not enough.

What would sustain Arlene in the years to come? How could she keep from being overwhelmed?

Arlene and her friends faced life’s most bracing questions head-on. These were people, including Vandy’s friends across the ocean in Ecuador, whose breathing in was the word of God and whose breathing out was prayer. This rhythm helped them discern what Jesus meant when he said, “If any will come after me, let them deny themselves, and take up their cross daily and follow me.”

They embraced the way of the cross. What some would call a waste, they called good.
