Acedia found her beloved on that club floor, half-dressed and confused. People walked around her as if she were not there. Her coworkers had forgotten they ever saw her. Flora and Denise had gone elsewhere, claiming they had drunk too much. Yet Mercy remembered. She didn’t understand, but she remembered.

“Darling, darling…” Acedia knelt behind her shaking mortal and attempted to soothe her with tender caresses. “I am here. You are safe. She cannot hurt you now.”

Tears streamed from Mercy’s eyes. She could not speak, every word a choke in her throat. The shaking would not stop. Acedia had no choice but to cover Mercy’s body with her own and use the last of her precious energy to take her home.

She wished she could have slept with Mercy. Changed her clothes. Washed her up. Tucked her in. Yet it was all Acedia could do to physically take Mercy home right away and lay her upon the bed. Now that she was far from that awful energy, Mercy could breathe again. She still could not speak, but her moans said much.

“I love you, Mercy.” Acedia was falling away to the air around them. Like Vainglory, she would have to recuperate in another realm, keeping one watchful eye on this sorry mortal. “Do not forget it. You are loved. Soon, you and I will be one, and it will be the greatest joy, the greatest pleasure you have ever experienced.”

She stayed as long as she could, but the moonlight could only do so much for her weakening soul. Acedia’s hand lingered on Mercy while the rest of her fragile, heavenly form disappeared into thin air. When Mercy suddenly awoke a few minutes later, she felt that hand on her side, even if she could no longer see it.

She felt many things. The warmth of Acedia’s love – and the chilling despair of the one who would claim her for the darkness.
