Chapter 23

“How could he hurt you?” Keira whispered. Her hands worshipped Paul’s face and the pads of her fingers traced his lips. They curved softly as he hummed.

“Who?” He wondered. Aiden? Reginald? Lavender? They all hurt him at some point but Paul could have used a little more warning from Lavender, if he actually cared.

“My brother. He hurt you for a long time, didn’t he?” She pouted sympathetically but Paul blew it off as he rolled toward her and propped his head up with his hand.

“I did most of that to myself. You ever just live with a thing and make it part of your identity?” He raised his brows at her and she gave him a flat look. He chuckled as he gave her nose a playful flick. “I think you know a little something about that. I decided I was the sad sap who kept his head down and did his job while he waited for a second chance. I lost track of time and put everything into my career and fooled myself into thinking I’d get another shot with Aiden because he was still around. He’d call me once or twice a year for help or the FBI would bring him in on one of my cases, so I thought it made sense to keep myself available. But that was on me. He never led me on or told me to wait. I just assumed it wouldn’t last with Lane and I’d be able to slide back in and finally tell Aiden how I felt.”

“He doesn’t care who he hurts,” she said and sneered as she slid away and off the bed. Paul sighed as he sat up and pulled his knees to his chest.

“I promise, he does. There’s a misconception about autistic people, that they don’t feel things like ‘normal people,’ that they’re like robots.” He saw another sneer and nodded. She knew. “Reginald’s done it. He calls Aiden a robot but even he knows that Aiden feels everything. He just can’t understand what he’s feeling or how to process it. I think, with Reginald, it’s about sex, not feelings. He assumes Aiden isn’t human if he can resist me, because Reginald’s biased,” he explained and flashed her a cocky grin. She dropped onto the stool and fiddled with a piece of grey chalk.

“He kept you on the side and slept around for years. Why do you make excuses for him?”

“I asked him if he wanted to be exclusive, after we started hooking up regularly, but Aiden told me he wasn’t interested in a monogamous relationship. He never led me on,” Paul insisted and held up his hands. “I did that to myself. And I did something even worse,” he said then dropped his head and swore. He felt like hell and hated himself when he remembered. “I told myself that Aiden didn’t understand what he wanted, that I knew better and eventually he’d pick me because I was right there and he always came back to me.
