How to Sew a Waistband (Method 1)

1 Cut waistband on the lengthwise grain, ideally along the selvedge. Cut waistband elastic equal to the length of your waistband piece minus 4" (10 cm). Cut two pieces of woven interfacing the width of the elastic to add to the ends of the waistband elastic, one piece 5" (12.5 cm) and the other 3" (7.5 cm).

2 Fold interfacings in half and overlap the ends of the elastic by ½" (1.25 cm) then fuse the two halves together and to the ends of the elastic. Secure the interfacing further to the elastic with stitches. This finished piece of elastic plus interfacing pieces should measure exactly as long as the waistband piece, less 1" (2.5 cm) for seam allowances.
