Chapter 7

WHEN EVERYONE HAD GONE and the tables were cleared, Pepper raised the shades to signal the café was again open to the public. No surprise, the first people through the door were Ida Belle and Gertie. However, they didn’t even ask one question about what happened when the will was read. Pepper narrowed her eyes. “You two already know all the details, don’t you?”

Ida Belle nodded. “Francine was texting us as it happened.” So much for turning off the electronics, Pepper thought.

“Well, I guess that saves me from having to tell you everything.”

“Yes, but now it’s even more important that you come with us after work today,” Gertie said.

Pepper looked at both of them. Gertie was dead serious, while Ida Belle sort of rolled her eyes. Whatever they had planned must be Gertie’s idea. “Okay, I’ll bite. Where are you going?”

“I have a friend,” Gertie began. Oh, great, Pepper thought. Gertie’s friends were unpredictable, to say the least. “She’s an energy healer.”

Pepper laughed. “Thanks for worrying, but I have my own source of energy. It comes in a big cup, sweet and creamy with plenty of caffeine.”

Gertie was shaking her head and Ida Belle was definitely rolling her eyes now. “No, she can help you with your aura.”

“My what?”

“Your aura. Olivia has it in for you even more after today. You need a strong, stable aura that will repel anything she throws at you.”

“And, um, what exactly do you expect Olivia to throw at me?”

Gertie looked around and lowered her voice, “Voodoo spells.”

“Mkayyy. Tell ya what, I think I’m going to pass on this one.”

Ida Belle sweetened the deal. “We’re also going to have her look at Persie’s autopsy photos and tell us what she thinks of the markings. She is, shall we say, an expert in those matters.”

Well, now, that was a much better reason for an evening trip with the ladies. “Okay, you got me. Pick me up at 8:30 after I’m done closing everything down.”

Gertie and Ida Belle nodded. Pepper figured they had known all along she would go.
