CHAPTER 44

When Sahira’s fangs pierced his flesh and his blood filled her mouth, she bit back a groan as the ambrosia of it hit her tongue. She’d never get used to how amazing he tasted.

But even though every part of her body became hyperaware of him, she kept her bloodlust leashed. It took everything she had, but she managed to control it.

When her eyes lifted to his, the ravenous gleam in his gaze curled her toes. It simmered in his eyes like a pot about to boil, but, true to his word, he didn’t touch her or come any closer.

Instead, he gave her the distance she often craved from him… but not this time.

She itched to move closer as those eyes, burning into hers, set fire to her body. Never in a million years could she have imagined a look could turn her on so much, but what a searing, ravenous, all-encompassing, sinful look it was.

It was impossible to break eye contact; she could no more do so than she could will her bones to break. When his eyes roamed over her, she felt them like his hands skimming over her.

When his gaze returned to hers, it was hungrier than before, something she wouldn’t have believed possible only seconds ago. Her knees shook, her fingers trembled, and wetness spread between her legs even though he didn’t touch her.

Reluctantly, she retracted her fangs, licked the blood from his wrist, and released it. A bereft, empty feeling filled her at the loss of contact.

“Did you get enough?” he asked.

Still so rattled by his presence and the searing intensity of his gaze, it took her a few seconds to answer. “Yes.”

“Good.”

With that, he turned and walked over to the pile of wood she’d gathered. His gait was more awkward than before; she assumed it was because he was as turned on as her and his erection made it difficult to move.

The possibility made her mouth water, but she didn’t move. She was as rattled by the fact he’d turned and walked away, like he’d promised, as she was by what transpired between them.

She could only stand there shivering as she tried to process what happened while emotions and lust battered her. While feeding, she’d shut down the bloodlust, but not the truth… she wanted him.

When he rose with an armload of firewood and turned toward her, she closed the distance between them, clasped his stubble-roughened cheeks, and kissed him. He went rigid against her, but when her tongue stroked his lips, they softened.

For the first time, she didn’t have to bury her doubts about this as they kissed. The wood he held clattered to the ground a second before his arms enveloped her.

Breaking the kiss, he leaned back to look at her. Even with the rigid evidence of his arousal prodding her belly, he said, “This isn’t what I was after.”

She believed him. Instead of responding, she kissed him again.
