Managing Your Boss

Let’s begin with a difficult problem that no one likes to have to face – or has been trained to solve.

The situation

It’s near the end of the day, and your boss asks you to come to his office. You’ve been dreading him asking you to do extra work just as he did yesterday and the day before that and the day before that. It’s all too much. Your partner is fed up with you coming home late and exhausted. You hinted to your boss yesterday that enough was enough, but he obviously didn’t get the message, because here he is asking you to write a report for tomorrow morning. You mutter that you’ll do your best and beat a hasty retreat, complaining to your trusty secretary that it’s a pity your boss doesn’t know how to manage his team.

What are you going to do? You are fed up. How late will it be before you get home tonight? What are you going to say to your partner? Whatever you do, you are sure to upset someone: your boss, your partner or your staff.
