Chapter 6
The woman with fake red hair, Myra, I thought her name was, stood in the driveway right about where I'd found myself standing a little while ago. She beckoned, turned, and went into the woods lining the gravel drive. I hurried after her, unable to do anything else. For a wild moment, I hoped my mother would come running, but she didn't. Heavily, I realized they were probably doing something to keep her inside, the same way they were forcing me to leave.
I followed Myra through the trees around behind the house. It was hard going in the heeled sandals, but I couldn't even slow down to take them off. She led me down a rough path to a clearing where we'd once had a picnic table. I could remember having lunch sometimes back there in the summer in the seclusion of the trees, all shady and cool, the ground covered with ferns. They were all brown now, killed by an early frost, and a few branches and broken limbs lay scattered about. The picnic table was gone. Evidently, my mother didn't come back here very often.
But the center of the clearing was still open. In fact, this space was larger than I remembered it being, unlike the house itself, and I was a little surprised that it hadn't grown up more in the thirteen years since I'd last been here. Not that it mattered greatly at this point. I felt heavy and discouraged, all the choices taken from me.

Myra gestured to me impatiently, and I went to her side.
"Hand it over," she said, nodding toward the emerald. "I like that."
I closed my fist and covered it with my other hand. A little rebellion still remained.
She rolled her eyes. "Damn it, do I need to cut the dog?"
"No," I whispered and held out my hand. The stone glittered. In despair, I wished my mother had never given it to me.
Impatiently, Myra grabbed my fingers and started to yank on the ring. Somehow, it was fitting a lot tighter than it had a minute ago.
"Myra!" A low voice commanded. "Leave it."
We both looked up. Blue-green eyes. Him. Aranth! The name came to me. I would have run to him save for the very slight stopping motion he made with his right hand. I froze.
Despair still hung around me, but the light in the clearing felt somehow brighter with him in it.
"He and the ring are going to the same place," Aranth said.
"No need to damage either one."
Myra gave a harsh laugh, but she let go. "Admit you just like the sight of his hand with it on," she said, switching her hold to my arm and pulling me forward.
Aranth turned and began to walk toward the center of the clearing. I wasn't sure where he'd come from. After a few steps, he glanced back and called to Hope. She bolted for him as I longed to, and it felt good to see him bend and rub her neck.
