Dawn’s faint rays filtered between the curtains’ gaps to spear his eyes and remind him of all that had passed. She hadn’t indicated knowledge of the belly ring. He hadn’t brought it up, not knowing the extent of her mind’s limits.

Her future included horrific nightmares awaiting her at the end of every day. Her imagination would conjure all manner of possibilities to prolong the suffering, and there was nothing he could do other than provide support through his presence.

Her attachment to the pup would provide a positive light through the darkness. While she slept, he tapped out a text to Whisper for another item to give her tangible reminders of hope.

Unless he could encourage at least a neutral outlook on intimacy, she’d shun an important aspect of life, a crime against nature for any young woman. The next few weeks were crucial in healing both body and spirit.

A longer-range plan had formed during the wee hours when monsters of the night held sway against sanity and civility. At the kidnapper’s shack, he’d found no evidence of rape, but that would enter her thoughts sooner or later.

Why the bastard performed crude surgery, then inserted the belly ring on someone considered a prize, remained a mystery he’d solve at knifepoint.
