Jethro took a big bite from his hot dog as Spencer drove, getting back on the nearly deserted freeway.

“Ended up deciding not to get any snacks, eh?” Jethro asked, his mouth full of pink meat and a rainbow of condiments.

Spencer’s upper lip quivered, but he said nothing.

“Are you mad?” He asked in a teasing tone then took another bite.

Still, Spencer gave no response.

Jethro laughed and tiny pieces of moist bread flew from his mouth sticking to the car’s interior. “Why?” He looked at Spencer. “Because your little trick didn’t work and your piggy pal didn’t come to your rescue?”

Spencer’s face hardened with fury, but he remained silent.

“So, how much have you figured out by now?”

Spencer glanced at him then back at the road. “What is the point of all this?”

Jethro laughed loudly like a maniac.

Spencer’s brow furrowed. “What do you want? Why me? And where are we really going?”

“Ya know, Spence, I warned you.” He set his hot dog on the dash board and leaned toward Spencer. “I told you not to try anything.”

Spencer swallowed hard.

“But you did it anyway.” Jethro leaned in closer until his breath prickled Spencer’s skin. “Just like a strong willed child.”

In the distance Spencer could see several specks near the outer edge of the freeway, but he paid no mind to them.

“And do you know what happens to strong willed children who don’t do as they’re told?”

Spencer turned to meet Jethro’s dark eyes.

“They get punished.”

The tiny specks made their way into the far lane of the freeway.

Jethro’s foot slammed down on top of Spencer’s, pressing the pedal to the floor, accelerating the car. He grabbed hold of the steering wheel and jerked the car. Spencer froze with surprise and watched out the windshield, bracing himself, sure that Jethro was going to wreck the car into the line of trees just beyond the black top, but he didn’t. The small specks came into view. Just as Spencer’s eyes met those of the innocent family of kittens slowly making their way across the otherwise empty freeway he tried to take back control of the car, to swerve it back away from their path, but he was too late. The car bumped silently as it bulldozed over three or four of the six kittens like tiny speed bumps.

Jethro smirked, letting go of the wheel and taking back his foot. He slid back into his seat, grabbed his hot dog and shoved what was left in his mouth.

Spencer peered into the rearview mirror. Lumps were all that remained of the kittens, the others scurried around their dead, mangled bodies frantically. Spencer shuddered and though he was deeply terrified and disturbed, he kept any sign of it from his face. He wouldn’t give Jethro the satisfaction.

They drove in silence a long time before Spencer finally found the courage to speak. “So, what made you want to go into pathology?” He decided it was to his benefit now more than ever to get to know this creep. Find out what it was that made him tick.
