CHAPTER TWELVE

Jack couldn’t fall asleep for a few hours, but when he finally drifted off, he slept so heavily that he didn’t dream. When he opened his eyes again, a heavy hand knocked on the suite's front door hard enough to shake the walls.

He threw some clothes on and stumbled to the door as Rachel was poking her head out of her room. “What’s going on?” she asked.

“Go back to bed,” he told her. “Whatever it is, I’ll deal with it.”

She mumbled something like “mmmpf” and closed her bedroom door. Jack opened the door to the suite and saw the Geomancer standing there, with Dust Devil behind him.

“You ready to work?” asked the Geomancer.

“Sure.”

He stepped out into the corridor and closed the door behind him. Some breakfast or at least some coffee would have been nice, but Jack was eager to show these two what he was capable of.

“Where are we going?” he asked as the Geomancer turned and started walking down the hallway.

“You’re gonna like it,” the Geomancer replied. “It’s like an underground arena. The SPP uses it for testing various discoveries and devices. They’re not using it for anything right now, which means we get to use it for a training ground.”

“More like a testing ground,” muttered Dust Devil.

Jack didn’t reply. This guy was obviously a skeptic, so the only way to shut him up was to prove him wrong. After he did that, neither Dust Devil nor anyone else would have anything to say.

The Geomancer led him through the corridors without another word, leaving Jack with plenty of time to think about the situation. He was nervous about giving a good impression of his abilities, especially after everything that had happened the day before.

A buzz of nervous energy surged through his veins like he had drunk too much coffee. Jack tried to remind himself that he’d already defeated a veteran FPM elementalist when he fought the Pyro at the charcoal factory.

Yes, he’d had some help from his friends, but still. He’d only had a few days to learn how to use his powers, and he had taken down one of their top people and two backup operatives with him.

If he could handle a challenge like that despite his lack of experience, he should certainly be able to give a good showing now after months of almost daily practice.

So, why did he feel so nervous?

“Here we are,” the Geomancer told him as he stopped before a set of double doors.

“Allow me,” Dust Devil commented and flicked his hand. A burst of wind pushed the doors open.

The Geomancer shook his head. “It ain’t so hard to open a door, man.”

They went inside, and Jack looked around at what his new coworker had called an underground arena. It certainly looked the part. What anyone would have called a fighting pit took up the center of the room, surrounded by rows of bleachers.

Various heavy objects were scattered around the fighting pit. Jack noticed a pile of cinder blocks, a heavy black anvil, and a pile of what looked like throwing knives.
