EIGHT

Sister Eloise pushed the pedal into the floorboard.

The engine of the van roared violently, an incessant knocking coming from somewhere deep inside. Eloise didn’t know the first thing about cars–or motor vehicles of any kind, for that matter–but it didn’t take a genius to know this wasn’t good. It sounded as if something was broken, like maybe a bolt had sheared free and was now bouncing around inside the engine.

She prayed that the van wouldn’t break down. If it died out here in the middle of nowhere, then Sophia would die too, no doubt. The poor girl was on the verge of bleeding to death.

She was unconscious now. Still, she grasped at her belly as if her brain was telling her this was what she needed to do if she wanted to stay alive, to prevent the life leaking out of her.

“Please don’t die on me,” Eloise said to Sophia’s unconscious form. “We’re almost there. Just hold on. We’re going to get you to a doctor.”

Sophia grunted, perhaps in response to Eloise, but just as likely not.

Eloise returned her eyes to the road. She wasn’t sure why, but it was at that moment that it occurred to her she was no longer in possession of a weapon. She’d left her shotgun on the floor of the nazi’s hideout.

She felt naked without it. She felt exposed. She felt like she was somehow begging something bad to happen. She considered the possibility that she might be able to get back there in time to retrieve her stuff, before somebody else beat her to it …

But that didn’t matter, not right now. Sophia was dying. She needed to get to the hospital.

The van continued to chug along, the thunking from the engine growing louder with every hundred yards. It was as if the vehicle was begging for mercy, begging Eloise to stop torturing it so. But Eloise continued to drive. She’d drive it into the ground if she had to. She needed to get Sophia to the hospital, goddammit! She pushed her foot down onto the accelerator even harder now, hoping that doing so might somehow force the van to go faster.

There were no streetlights out here. The narrow road on which she was driving snaked through the countryside, flanked on both sides by trees, so thick that even the moonlight was unable to penetrate. The headlights sliced through the darkness, yet somehow did little to illuminate the way ahead. Eloise knew she shouldn’t be driving so fast. If another car were to appear, driving in the opposite direction, then there was every chance they’d all wind up dead. But there was no time to even consider this. Sophia was her number one priority now.

It seemed to take forever, but, eventually, Eloise began to see signs of civilisation. Road signs and streetlights began appearing more frequently. And then there was the odd house here and there, a farm or a converted barn. And then, a main road, illuminated in all directions by yellow streetlights.
