Chapter 11

After our decidedly forgettable meeting on the subway, Drake carried me all the way to his car and offered to drive me home.

“How did you find me?” I have to ask. He was the last person I was expecting to see, apart from the other guy.

“As soon as you told me you were at your brother’s, I started looking for you. You didn’t ask me for a ride home, but I figured you’d need one and, as I was driving over, I saw you running towards the subway, so I pulled over and followed you. Good job you didn’t hear me cursing as I chased after you!”

I listen to his explanation, feeling like a total idiot all over again. It was a miracle that he saw me and decided to follow. “I don’t know how to thank you. Honestly, from the bottom of my heart, and I can’t apologise enough for being so stupid.”

Drake shakes his head then focuses on the road ahead.

In a few minutes we’re at his apartment and, though neither of us says a word, we decide to put what happened on the subway behind us. I lie down next to him on his huge bed and finally feel myself relax. All I want to do is forget everything that happened this evening. Suddenly, however, Drake takes me by surprise and does something he’s never done before:

He holds me tight.

Spooning me from behind, his body tight against mine, he wraps his arms around me like a second skin. Feeling him close in every possible way makes me feel happy and protected.

It’s incredible. The more I think about us, the more I’m amazed at the progress we’ve made in this relationship. Fortunately, the distance between us that I’d felt over the past few days is now just a memory and, despite the evening’s negative events, I fall asleep with my heart bursting with joy.

The night passes quickly and I wake next morning at my usual time to find the daylight streaming through the window.

I’m getting used to the fact that Drake is such an early riser but it means waking up to an empty bed and I miss having him next to me. Sometimes I wish he wasn’t such an early bird so we could snuggle for a few minutes.

It looks like cuddling is off the menu right now, so I sit up, stretching lazily, then reach for my phone to check my messages. There are several on WhatsApp, but not from my friends: this time they’re from Jeff.

I take a deep breath and read through them.

- Where do you get off, stealing from me? –

Good morning, Vivienne! He may have been as high as kite, but it didn’t take him long to figure out what happened.

- Fuck you, Viv! Fuck you! You bring me a pizza then run off with my stuff? If that’s how it is, then don’t bother showing your face round here! -

He’s starting to get a little aggressive, but it’s not over yet.
