Chapter Fourteen

“What’s with the pouty lip?” Eloise asked through a mouth full of sugary, marshmallow-infused cereal stuffed in her cheek.

“You look like a chipmunk,” I told her.

Chewing her food, she swallowed until her mouth was empty. “Better?”

“Much.”

“So? Miss Pouty Pants? What’s going on?”

Pulling my robe tighter around me, I frowned at her. “I’m not pouting.”

Pointing at me with her spoon, Eloise said, “Yes, you are. I could use your lip as a springboard into a pool, it’s sticking out so far.”

Sucking my lip back completely behind my teeth, I sneered, “Is this what I should look like?”

“You look equally ridiculous,” Eloise said, leaning onto the granite countertop and laughing. I wanted to be mad at her for not being affected by my snarky tone, but she was right—I was pouting. “Did you forget that you won last night? I know of at least one person who’d kill to be you right now.”

“Who’s that?”

“Mark. The guy who got voted off last night? Or did you also forget we’re in a competition, and we’re being methodically picked off one by one?”

“Right. Yes, I’m happy I won.” Grabbing a Danish pastry from a box left out on the counter, I went over to the living area and flopped onto the couch. I took a bite of the pastry, licking the crumbs off my lips. Outside, I could see the street lights flickering off and sunlight taking over the skyline.

“You have an odd way of showing it.”

“I’m fine,” I said forcefully. “I didn’t sleep very well. Now can we drop it?”

“If you insist,” Eloise said, her cheek bulging with another scoop of cold cereal.

“I do insist.”

Tipping my head back on the couch, I took another bite, wishing the headache using my brain as a drum would go away. I opened my eyes as I heard Eloise following me to the living area with her cereal. Sitting on the loveseat, she crossed her legs and tucked her feet beneath her. The twinkle in her smile told me something exciting had happened last night, and she was bursting to tell someone.

“So, your performance last night was totally killer. Where did you uncover this new woman that’s taken over your body?”

“Oh,” she giggled. “That. For the first time last night, I didn’t feel like I was absolutely terrified to go out on stage. It was actually fun. Is that what it’s like for you?”

“Most of the time. You did good,” I complimented.

“It felt good to be out there,” she agreed. Excitement continued to buzz inside Eloise until she was practically quivering.

“What? Was performing not the highlight of your evening?” I probed, sinking my teeth into the jam-filled center of my breakfast. She vigorously shook her head no, and it made me sit up and pay attention. “Well, come on. Spit it out.”

Craning her neck to look around the apartment, she looked hesitant about divulging her secret.

“You know everyone else is going to be asleep for at least another hour,” I pointed out.

“Alright,” Eloise agreed but still lowered her voice.
