Bethany

“When we get there, keep your eyes open,” Derek tells me as we drive to the museum. “Especially when we’re watching the surveillance tapes. If Roberts is involved, he’s going to try and distract me. So you need to pay close attention.”

“I can do that,” I tell him happily, still feeling ridiculously giddy since he presented the earrings to me, diamond earrings! “I brought a notebook and everything.”

“Good,” he mumbles, before glancing over at me and admitting, “We make a good team.”

“We make a great team,” I tell him, reaching out and squeezing his arm.

Today had started out awkward but has gone better than I ever could’ve imagined it would. There’s no way a man would pick out diamond earrings for a woman if he didn’t have genuine feelings for her. They are freaking diamonds! No one, not even my parents, has given me this nice of jewelry before. I’m never taking them off.

I can’t wait to show them to JoJo when she comes into work tomorrow morning. I quickly texted her earlier while Derek was carrying the last box of supplies into the basement and I waited in the car.

Bethany: OMG! Guess what Derek bought me!

JoJo: A kitten?

It was a good guess. I have been lobbying Derek for a house cat as a company mascot, for over a year. I think it would be nice to have a cat around, and everyone would enjoy the snuggles. It’s the only time Derek has emphatically told me no, and I have not been able to cajole a yes out of him. I haven’t given up.

Bethany: No, still working on a kitty. lol

Bethany: Diamond earrings! Says they’re 4 my birthday.

JoJo: OMG!

JoJo: Wait… UR birthday is in Nov? lol

Bethany: I know! <3 Show u 2morrow. We’re heading 2 the museum.

JoJo: I’ll interrogate u later ;) Get ur man girl!

I smile giddily at JoJo’s response. I want to text Mike as well since he has been supportive of my mission to get Derek to act on his feelings, but the man himself gets back into the car. I don’t feel comfortable texting about him when he’s only inches away. It seems rude.

Soon we are pulling up to the curb several blocks from the museum. Exiting the car, I meet Derek on the sidewalk. He puts his large hand on my back and leads me gently towards the building. I find myself melting and tingling all over from his simple unfamiliar touch.

Jason Roberts meets us on the steps of the entrance, looking nervous.

“Thank you for coming on time,” he says, quickly ushering us inside. “Let’s go to my office.”

We bypass security, going through a side door that leads into a long hallway. The marble floors echo as we walk in silence. I look over at Derek to see him scrutinizing the back of Mr. Roberts’ head with a scowl.

As we walk, I quietly take the notebook and a pen out of my purse. I jot down a few notes about the entrance we’ve taken, the lack of cameras and how you can move practically anywhere in the museum without being seen.
