Chapter Five – Felicity

Police fail to arrest elusive killer after months. Claims of corruption within the ranks.

What a great international headline. Felicity huddled up with Zoe and Horace in the office, glumly examining the news on Felicity’s PC. Most of their task force moved in a state of shock, not quite registering the situation, and rebuffing lingering members of the paparazzi outside whenever anyone left. The whole situation seemed set to burn down from the inside out, and Braxon dealt with angry official after angry official, along with the two lawyers assigned to their department.

The mayor’s body held no clues. Felicity had followed the red Thread to its point of origin, where the mayor had been murdered in his own bed. Malory interrogated the body, which knew nothing and brimmed with horror and outrage over its own death.

Leaving work proved an ordeal, because Felicity needed to dodge a clamoring horde of paparazzi and make it to her car with Horace, and then shake off the over-eager ones who insisted on following in their own vehicles. Not keen to lead them to her apartment, Felicity parked nearby a restaurant and dragged Horace into it.

“Sorry, I won’t take you home yet. Don’t want to lead them right to it.”

“They can pull our addresses from the public records if they look anyway,” Horace said, but he didn’t otherwise protest the avenue of choice. Felicity flushed, a little aware it might look like a date from an outsider’s perspective, rather than two harried, magical police officers completely done with the attention.

“I’ll order for us if you want,” Felicity offered, giving Horace a smile. “Unless you have food waiting for you at home?”

“Ah, no. Nothing of the sort. Sure,” he said. “Been a while since I’ve eaten properly out.”

“When was the last time?” Felicity said, before inwardly wincing. Yes, great, smart question to ask. When else would he have been out?

“With my ex,” he rumbled, and she berated herself some more.

“Right. Yeah. Sorry.”

“Over a year ago,” he admitted, and she quirked her eyebrows up.

“Wait, is that how long…?”

“We’ve been split up a few months. But things hadn’t really been working out for a while,” Horace said. “It is how it is. I could’ve been better at the whole relationship, but after my sister died… let’s just say I lost interest in maintaining anything.”

“Oh,” Felicity said, feeling dumb and stupid. Great, two sensitive topics with Horace in the space of twenty seconds. Doing real great over here. “I really need to stop talking, don’t I?”

Horace let out a chuckle, and his bright green eyes settled on her. “It’s okay, I’m not upset or anything.”

Thank god, because she was about ready to dig herself into a hole and die. She was far more nervous than she intended to be while sitting down opposite him and scanning the menu. This wasn’t a big deal. Just sitting with her boss in a restaurant, while people crawled in to take discreet pictures of them.

No big deal. Probably a page twenty at best, with their story shoved in the margins of a newspaper.
