Chapter Ten

Zeus

“What the hell are you doing here, Darric?” I hissed, feeling the hairs on the back of my neck rise.

“Do you really need to ask me that?” he retorted furiously. “You’ve been AWOL, avoiding us.”

“How did you even find me?” I shot back, vaguely aware of Lori watching me from across the restaurant.

“Find My Phone.”

I groaned to myself, wondering why I hadn’t just turned the device off, but it was too late to worry about that now.

“This is clearly not a good time. Go home and we’ll talk later.”

Darric’s dark eyes moved toward where Lori and Kenzie sat, his mere gaze at them sending me into a tailspin. I didn’t want my brother or anyone else to know about Lori. If I had, I would have told him.

“What is this?” he demanded, moving his eyes back toward me. “Who are they?”

“It’s none of your damned business,” I growled, folding my arms defensively over my chest. “You really need to leave.”

I could feel my anger bubbling to the surface, particularly when Darric was staring at me with such contempt.

“Are you on a date?” Darric demanded, dubiousness flooding his voice. “With a mom?”

“I just told you to mind your own business, Dare,” I rasped, knowing that my ire was going to lead to terrible consequences if I didn’t get rid of him soon.

“Are you out of your mind?” Darric snapped, his tone growing louder. “You have no control over yourself these days. What were you thinking getting involved with anyone, let alone a woman with a child?!”

I gritted my teeth, the poke of my fangs eminent.

Oh gods, not now, I thought, swallowing the overwhelming need to shift. Not here, not in front of Kenzie and Lori. She’s already worried enough about me being a wolf. I can’t confirm her suspicions.

“You need to come back to the base with me,” Darric said flatly. “And we need to figure out what we’re going to do about you.”

I scoffed.

“I’m not going anywhere with you!”

Our eyes clashed and even without speaking, my brother’s eyes seemed to taunt me.

Is he trying to goad me into shifting here?

My heart pounded in my chest and the roar of blood rushing into my ears made my head dizzy. I knew I had barely two minutes before I lost control and Darric was showing no signs of leaving.

It was game over. Lori and Kenzie were going to see the terrifying side of me and I would never get her back again.

Suddenly, I saw Darric’s eyes darken as he looked over my shoulder but before I could turn to look, I felt soft fingers curl around my clenched fist.

“Is everything okay over here?” Lori asked softly. Like a wave had swept through the dining room, I was abruptly encompassed in peace. Gone was the smothering desire to shed my human skin and lunge at my brother. I felt nothing but calm.

“We’re having a private conversation,” Darric said flatly but Lori did not move and I unfurled my hand to hold hers.

“You interrupted our evening,” I barked at my brother.
